Small neck???

New member
I have allways had bad neck problems (gone through a lot of physical therapy). Nothing really helped but I have kind of figured out what the problem is. It is tiny!!! (and whenever I gain some mass it starts to the problems start to flare up) I just took some back shots and noticed the back of my neck and the whatever muscle lies straight down from there is relatively small compared to the rest of my back. What can I do to make my neck stronger (and be able to support my mass) without hurting/injuring it in the process. My neck is very fragile and I barely can do db presses. Please help I need to start getting this developed and taken care of so I don't have worse problems when I get much larger. I need some exercises/things I can do (that won't hurt it)

well i think you should go vistit a good chiorpractor... that is what they do..
they will be able to look at you neck and tell you what the problem is...
if it is unstable.. you dont want to do any exersices... with it..
but that muscle is your trap.. it holds your head up when you lean forward..

Well you actually have a few muscles in your neck, your traps, longissimus, splenius, sternocledomastoid. There are a lot of muscles in the neck.

I used to go to the chiro all the time, didn't help much:( But yea maybe I need to work traps more, since usually starts hurtting if I have to hold my neck up for a while (and that muscle gets tired)

Right now all I am doing is 4 sets of barbell shrugs (and hold for a second at top of movement, with rep scheme as 12,10,8,6). Only using about 150 pounds, maybe I should stop being a girl and bump up the weight

ha ha... well ya there are..

1. Anterior scalene muscle
2. Erector spinae muscle

3. Laryngeal muscles

4. Levator scapulae muscle

5. Longissimus capitis muscle

6. Masseter muscle

7. Medial pterygoid muscle

8. Middle scalene muscle

9. Muscles of the floor of the mouth

10. Obliquus capitis inferior muscle

11. Parotid gland

12. Platysma

13. Rectus capitis posterior major muscle

14. Rotator and multifidi muscles of the neck

15. Semispinalis capitis muscle

16. Semispinalis cervicis muscle

17. Splenius capitis muscle

18. Sternocleidomastoideus muscle

19. Submandibular gland

20. Trapezius muscle

put it think he was refering to the trap.. ha ha

well maybe you should try... laying on your stomach and hanging your head of the side of your bead . or a bench.. and doing head raises.. but i sure hope it does not agrivate the problem..

1. Anterior scalene muscle
2. Erector spinae muscle- This is a group of three muscles all of which DO NOT extend into the neck.
3. Laryngeal muscles

4. Levator scapulae muscle

5. Longissimus capitis muscle- One of three erector spinae muscles.
6. Masseter muscle- Not in the neck. Is a chewing muscle.

7. Medial pterygoid muscle

8. Middle scalene muscle

9. Muscles of the floor of the mouth- Again in the mouth nothing to do with the neck.
10. Obliquus capitis inferior muscle

11. Parotid gland- Is a gland and has nothing to do with muscle in the neck.

12. Platysma- Is only fasica and has nothing to do with muscular development in the neck.
13. Rectus capitis posterior major muscle

14. Rotator and multifidi muscles of the neck

15. Semispinalis capitis muscle

16. Semispinalis cervicis muscle

17. Splenius capitis muscle

18. Sternocleidomastoideus muscle

19. Submandibular gland-Nothing to do with muscular developement.

20. Trapezius muscle

put it think he was refering to the trap.. ha ha

I wish I had that problem my doctor told me my sleep apnea was from a larger neck. Screw it I'll sleep when I die.

ha ha still trap.

Has anyone said anything useful yet? :)

Look, When I started training at about 13 years old I was about 5'8" and 135lbs, my neck could have been no more than 14 inches back then.

13 years and 90lbs and 4" in height later, after doing no direct neck work my neck is now 17 1/2 inches.

I remember when I was doing a lot of situps, that seemed to get my nesk feeling sore.

Deadlifts are great fo rthe traps and spine and should encourage some neck thickening.

Have you ever done roids?
Most effective solution to thicken your neck.
Neck has highest concentration of test receptors.
I am buying new shirts. My neck was 15 and I can't wear any of those shirts. New shirts that I am buying are 16 1/2" because I believe after a couple of more cycles, that's what my neck size would be.
Have you seen how thick Arnold's neck was? And all the other bid body builders?

i have a tiny neck too, but it has gotten a tiny bit bigger from straining it on deadlifts, shrugs and i dunno what else
