Scheduled layoffs...

...suck some serious ass. I'm on day 5 of a planned layoff from the gym, with another 3-4 days left to go and I'm hating every minute of it. Right now my body needs it (bad rotator cuff, screwed bicep tendon, tender lower back, possibly minor pec tear, etc), but that doesnt mean I have to like it. I'm sure I look the same as I did 5 days ago, but somehow I feel skinny and fat all at the same time, and I'm probably getting weaker by the minute...I know you tend to come back stronger and better from a layoff, but dammit it's tough sitting at home when you should be at the gym!

Thanks for listening to my extended rant

I hate that feeling.......but if you need it, you need it. Tough it out and enjoy having the extra time at Christmas with your family.:D

Kinda like going through detox.

On layoffs, I tend to unconsciously torture myself with "the Other Guy." He's the imaginary guy that's always one step ahead of me, and he's at the gym hitting my PR while I'm at home watching the muscle deteriorate of my newly aquired anorexic body joining the ranks of Joe Slob and the rest of the weenie popluation.:(

But, I always hit PRs when I get back. Good luck bro....only a few more days.

let me suggest some deep tissue massage while your resting - 10+ years of training and no massage? That's crazy!

CoolColJ, I've been thinking about it for a while now but I am also the worlds biggest procrastinator so it has just never happened.

Thaibox, that is sooo me, the other guy is my training partner who I have watched blow up over 20lbs in the last 5 weeks, it's hard enough to watch while you're still training...Oh well, it's all over when I get back, I only have a few months left to pass 250lbs...

The rest is totally worth it man...
I was depressed and pissed that I couldn't lift for 2 weeks...
Felt fat and deflated.... after two weeks, I hit the gym really hard.. and I did a few measurements... My amrs grew 1/2 an inch in that two week span and I went from 188 to 197 (albeit a lot of water). Im on week 2 of training again and I'm still sitting at 197 with next to no fat gain...
You'll be happy you let those joints rest as well...
IM with CoolColJ... Deep tissue massage has worked wonders for my rotator cuffs and my bicep tendon... if you are going to be serious about doing this for a LONG time.. you REALLY owe it to yourself... its like an oil change for your body.... I go every 3rd week now... VERY happy with the results..

Thanks

you're always stronger when you get back, if you're not out for more than 2 weeks.

if you need it, you need it

Needsize - I urge you to get it done - sure it hurts, but its worth it. I had my traps, pecs, biceps and shoulders done recently - the lady said they were all very tight, and the muscles look and feel different. My posture has improved a lot and ROM is is way better

I think they are growing stronger and bigger much faster now as well.

A lot of Cuff problems stem from lack of flexibility and tightness in certain muscle groups.

The funny thing is I wasted 5 years where I had full coverage that would have paid for the massage. I dont have coverage now but my wife's kicks in in a few weeks, I should check and see if its covered

Spend some time with that lovely wife of yours needsize, take a mental break too and get your brain outta the gym for awhile.

That's pretty much the plan, we visited my family this past weekend, hers tomorrow, so we're spending a lot of quality time together which makes the layoff much easier. She was at work tonight though, so there was ample time to feel sorry for myself. At least I have my puppy Jeebus to make me feel better....

Needsize,

This layoff will do you good. It will give you a chance to let all of your minor training injuries to heal. Don't worry about your strength. . . you will not lose any. The key is to eat like a horse and get plenty of rest. Also, become involved in sexual activity to help refresh the system. After this layoff, you will be ready to hit the gym with increased enthusiasm. Good luck!

awsome post

I have been in such a sad mood this week. I go to my schools gym, and last week it closed for a week for winter break. I have been so sad and feeling awful that i have just been eating and eating with minimal running and abs while i been off for this last week. I'm on gear too making the feeling even worse for me. i feel like i'm wasting my money. But after reading this post, i feel better. Be back in gym today, glad to see that a couple days off wont hurt me like i have been dreading. :)
