Someone's gotta make up for Mitch's lack of megapoasting.

Taking/giving questions for the next hour or until I decide to sleep.

Is there one scientist that is applauded that you think is overrated?

Does this give you wood?

Short Sharp Science: Mapping the most complex object in the known universe

interesting, now who is the most underrated?

Feynman, by far! (I'm rather biased here, but dude's one of the most amazing people of the 20th century.)

He has some great popular books that everyone should read, like Amazon.com: Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! (Adventures of a Curious Character) (9780393316049): Richard P. Feynman, Ralph Leighton, Edward Hutchings, Albert R. Hibbs: Books.

Penrose would be my second choice: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Penrose

Okay, I have one last one. What is one issue that the scientific community is aware of that other people should really be paying attention?

Hmm... that could go any number of ways.

I'm biased towards the physical and mathematical sciences, which don't really have any bearing on normal human life (despite my trolling to the contrary).

I honestly can't think of one single credited response to this question.

The most important scientific revolutions all include, as their only common feature, the dethronement of human arrogance from one pedestal after another of previous convictions about our centrality in the cosmos.

I've been meaning to read Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions for a few years...

when did you get interested in teh financials/investing?

Early '09. Did a couple trades with dad a long time ago, and shares I had in a company from back then were cashed out (company went private) and he gave me the cash after graduating. I already knew about all the astrophysics PhDs going to Wall Street, so I got into it to figure out why they were interested enough to go into the field. Sure enough: http://www.icpress.co.uk/etextbook/p556/p556_chap04.pdf

Did you see this story on "High Frequency Trading"? (rhetorical ... I know you don't watch TV)

It talks about the possibility of "rigging" the market.

Features a company called Tradeworx run by Manoj Narang and a small group of mathematicians and scientists called "quants," which is short for quantitative analysts. Their high speed computers trade 40 million shares every day.

Can anti matter be created? Are there current projects where funding is going towards the research/discovery of anti matter? Do I sound like a douchbag for even asking this because I feel like one.

Uh, yeah. This isn't Star Trek. Antimatter's a common thing to use/create/play with.

You can get the stuff from any particle accelerator or thunderstorm, but storage presents a problem with that pesky annihilation thing.

What is your education background?

Pretty TTT. BS physics, double minor math and chem. Studied at a directional and flagship state uni.

HS was T4 in state, T80 in midwest and like T800 nationally among publics. Never went to a private school, although parents wanted me to for HS.

Would like to do bschool, but waiting until I can get a full ride at a better uni than the TTT where I currently live... not sure I'd want to do bschool outside of the T20, even if free.

Contemplated sci grad school for quite some time, but decided against for a number of reasons, many of which can be summarized in the following now-famous blogtweet: Don't Become a Scientist!

Small non-plat avatars are small.

I've had about four avatars in ten years here. It's not something I really care about.

:cow:

You can change it for another big one in October if you so choose, when they give you your annual free week of Plat.

Cool. Never heard of them before.

I don't know if there's anything special to them... it's something I'd probably ask Nathan about for the details.

Astro would be a fantastic career, but there are so few observatories/jobs/funding out there that it seems a better hobby than occupation. I'd love to get a chance to play with a large telescope, though.

Market is going to go ape shit tomorrow

just sayin'

Market is going to go ape shit tomorrow

WTF, we know what quants are.

The markets will be fine tomorrow, and depending on the agreements reached, might very well rally this week given the oversold markets of the past 3-6 weeks.

Default possiblities have already been priced in. The US is not going to default on its debt any moar than it's going to launch a nuclear missle at Iraq.

Futures are up almost 200 points, and asian markets are up over a percent across the board. It looks like an agreement's already been reached. Prepare for a week-long rally.

did you and stefka have a serious relationship? are you over her?

are you more interested in getting rich, or contribooting to science?

what do you think holds the key to a happier life for you, in both the short term and long term?

what do you like most about yourself, and what do you like least?

what is causing you the most stress in your life right now?

are you seeing anybody currently, or at least pursuing someone?

The Cherry Icee at the Frostop Drive-In had little chunks of cherry in it. They'd get stuck in the straw but it was still amazingly good, when I was ten years old.

did you and stefka have a serious relationship? are you over her?

Oh yeah, definitely. Over her as much as I will ever be. I mean, we had some fantastic times together. Some of the best times of my life. We were together for around 2.5 years; and it was during the last year or so of school for both of us and we ventured out into the real professional world together. An important and memorable time in one's life, regardless of who you're with. Stefka's a fantastic person and part of me will always  her.

BTW, thanks for the candles, KB. They looked good on our mail table. :D

are you more interested in getting rich, or contribooting to science?

I'm not a PhD, and decided against grad school in the sciences some time ago, so it cannot be the latter. You can't really "contribute to science", in the way you're referring, without an advanced degree and academic life... or at least a quasi-academic life at a national lab or at CERN or something.

For the former, meh. It's only money. I never cared about getting rich. I'm moar interested in the ability to be able to support a family (whether or not I have one, or have kids, etc.) as the sole income-generating person (whether or not a SO wants to work doesn't matter... I grew up in a single-income household and kind of hold that as the measure of a man). Stability is important, too, but only so far as I'm not flying out to Shanghai to get clients because I don't have an income or something.

what do you think holds the key to a happier life for you, in both the short term and long term?

Short-term, making friends, having fun, and furthering career. I probably emphasize the first two because I don't really know many people here or hang out with colleagues... I work in ARE COUNTRY where people my age are all married, buying houses, and working on having their nth child. I don't really fit in here. But I'm moving in the next couple weeks, so we'll see how that goes.

what do you like most about yourself, and what do you like least?

I never know how to answer these questions. Probably why I'm not the best at interviewing or bar-flirting or times when I need to talk about myself.

I'm pretty average all around, with no major strengths or weaknesses (physically, mentally, psychologically; good upbrining, family, friends, mostly normal, interesting experiences and interests), so I'm pretty capable of doing anything I set my mind to. I have a "smart" degree, ex-competitive PLer and strong/muscular, good mental state (no weird mental flaws that I notice more and more in others as I get older), good upbringing...

Least, I suppose, is that I tend to overshoot/overestimate things and myself. Typical never good enough at x, y, or z, never where I want to be, e.g., financially (some people are millionairs and CEOs at 30, some people have a 2800 total at 30, some people have been married for 10 years and have a house and 2.3 kids, etc.), but I set my sights and goals higher than is generally reachable, so I'm fine with that. But my perceptions and attitudes can come across as skewed to others, especially in ARE COUNTRY... if you talk about entry-level jobs in primary markets starting at $160k and BIGFINANCE bonuses in the six figures or even the stock market, people look at you like you're crazy (although there are a few people interested in such city-folk things).

what is causing you the most stress in your life right now?

Probably lack of friends and fun. But, to be fair, I willingly left a lot of that kind of stuff to venture out into the world, follow my heart and dreams, etc. My old friends are the type to not leave the comfortable known, place they grew up, place they have friends, etc. to take chances, go somewhere new, or push the boundaries.

Oh, and not being a multi-billionair CFO/CEO ibanker hedge fund startup CERN senior physicist working <60 hours/week with a healthy family life and 2.3 kids in a 8000 sqft Long Island mansion who can B/S/D 500/800/700 raw. But I ain't gonna cry about it.

are you seeing anybody currently, or at least pursuing someone?

No. My social scene consists primarily of people I know from work who all grew up here, went to school here, and are generally very unlike me. Most people I know are married, and most are my age or younger. Even if I found someone worthy of pursuit, I wouldn't, as I am leaving this area shortly, and I'm not the fling or lead-someone-on type.

Jeez. Anything else, man? lol

:cow:

Why were u de-modded?

Disagreeing with the modgod policy. Specifically, giving other members karma and agreeing with poasts stating such and making comments against it [that is, cannot question the modgod rule, cannot "talk back" to mods when they're poasting, cannot "question" mods or anything they say, mods' words are final and infallible, etc.].

I maintain that EF, at least C&C, should be ran as a discussion board, and rules applying to members must necessarily apply to mods. Moreover, the moderator position is not one of power, karma, kickbacks, or product-pushing, but one where the individual *moderates* (that's it, just moderates) the discussion board, and nothing more. If a mod wants to poast in chat, such poasts should be taken in the same manner as anyone else, and the same rules should apply as they do for anyone else.

Throwing a fit and locking/banning someone who: disagrees with you; says something objectively non-positive about a sponsored product or board sponsor; says "fuck you, you're wrong!" when such a response is perfectly normal for the situation in question and you're not moderating but merely poasting; questions your "power"; ad nauseum, is not the character of a moderator on a board of EF's stature. I'm wrong, of course, but these are my opinions. And such opinions are not -- or at least were not at the time -- shared by many others. Some mods emailed support, but were unwilling to sacrifice their status to publicly agree with me.

I guess this is why I will never be a politican, lol.

:cow:

It's an internet meme coming from some political sign that read "RESPECT ARE COUNTRY" or something. You can probably google the phrase. Synonomous with "country" or "rural", but often used to refer to the less intelligent breeds of rural country folk.

:cow:

what did you used to do with your friends when you had them?

Hang out, do stuff, break into lighthouses, argue and debate stuff, work out, get drunk, play pool, inject steroids, hit on girls, make boats and set them on fire, go hiking, do metal stuff, narrowly avoid trouble, break walls down, get guns drawn on us at work while we're handcuffed, etc. Just normal stuff.

If you're wondering if I'm an IRL nerdvirg with mathnerd friends, that's just EF schtick. I don't have any academic friends back home... most of them never went to college.

:cow:

Yeah, we got those down here too, I just wasn't familiar with the term. Rural folk are a different breed, that's for sure. I had to deal with them occasionally at my previous job, and also whenever I have to interact with my stepmom's family.

One of the more infuriating parts of having to deal with Country Music shows was that it seemed like the entire genre had devolved into a weird Rural Lifestyle Affirmation ritual. It seemed like every song was about how "country" the songwriter was. But the bartenders sold lots and lots of cheap domestic beer, those folks'll drink up a lot of Bud Light and Pabst. But they sure look funny with their ironed, creased blue jeans, loud cowboy shirts, and license-plate-sized belt buckles, and they never take off their hats. I think I felt even more alienated by these crowds than I did when we had Black shows.
