West Florida has become a haven for illegals since Hurricane Ivan. One big problem is these guys aren't afraid to work. They'll bust thier collective asses on a roof for $8 an hour in August, live 10 to a room in an apartment, eating burritos and beer, and send every extra cent they make back to thier families in Mexico. I think they are noble for that.
That said, contractors should be asking the US government for assistance with visas for workers. I could tolerate them being here a lot more if they came here legally to work, paid taxes on what they earned and became members of our society. Right now, they use all the benefits of being an American, with none of the responsibility that entails.
If the State of Florida would crack down on hiring practices amongst building contractors and fruit farmers, the problem would go away here, as they would have no access to income. They don't have access to government welfare and other programs in this state. But local and state officials look the other way to keep the housing market moving.
