Push-up routine

Hey guys,

im have to go to the army in two months time for 11 months
I wanna do as many push ups i can, what is the best way to increase the number ?

I was thinking doing every day 1 more sit up. Any other ideas ?

Thanks

Do 5 sets of 1:00 each. You want to do the maximum number of pushups you can for each 1 min. set.
You can also increase try varying hand spacing (narrow and wide) or putting your feet up on the bench. Normal pushups will then seem easier.
Make sure you set up correctly for your test pushups: hands just outside shoulder width and even w/shoulders when you're in the up position. You want your weight evenly distributed on your chest, shoulders, and tris. Try breathing every other rep.

Read Pavel's article called "grease the groove" on dragondoor.com.

Basically, you want to do them all the friggin time basically. Staying within your capabilities. And then occasionally you push past failure and go balls out and see how many you can get in 2 minutes (the army test time).

I couldn't find the article Protobuilder mentioned (link?) but I think this approach is also sound. Found something similar at crossfit.
I'd caution against going to actual failure, though. It severely restricts your ability to recover- very counterproductive.

Easy Solution: Do 10 sets of Pushups to failure everyday. Once these become easy do them with 1 hand. When that is easy remove another hand.by this time your pecs should be huge and you should be able to do push ups simply by flexing yout chest. Super set these by flexing an erected penis

I don't really ever do push-ups I just weight train. My last PT(Physical Training ) Test which I took in APR I got 104 push ups in 2 minutes which is way beyond what they ask for. My age group max is 75 so I crushed that. My routine for chest is pretty much 4 warm ups sets and then 1 Heavy work set/RP on incline or flat whichever I feel like for that day. I been in for 5 years now and have never really trained by doing push ups (except at PT in the morning which is a joke if you are into weight training) I prefer to work out instead and since I been in Iraq I haven't actual done organized PT in about 8 months lucky me. You are pretty much only doing 25-35% of your body weight when doing a push up anyway so you could just load that on a barbell and lift away. If you can't get to a gym then I suggest incline push ups because you will be lifting more of your body weight that way and finish it with a four count push up which is:
count 1- half-way down (hold for 2 secs)
count 2- all the way down (hold for 2 secs)
count 3- halfway up (hold for 2 secs)
count 4- all the way up
that is 1 push-up
start over until failure
hand placement is up to you

When actually performing the test I suggest to go wide it will be easier to perform the push ups without getting fatigued.

Again this is just my opinion and what I have learned from my experiences and what has worked for me. You will still have to see what works best for you Good Luck man :)
