Pro's do this form of cardio

Does anyone here use slow walking on a treadmill for long duration for 45-60 mins. The article was over at BB.com and just recently i spoke to two other pro's who use the same method. obvisouly they must be doing something right. they said slow distance long duration burns fat most effeciently where as sprints and intervals HIT etc burn up alot of glycogen. They say this is the best way for lowering BF % while preserving lean body mass.

If your using this what pace and incline do you use on a treadmill and do you perform this on an empty stomache or after a workout?

I dunno if its true about glycogen, im not scientist.

But I don't think a pro bber is capable of doing sprints or HIIT cardio.

Imagine Ronnie Coleman running. lol.

Yes and no. Here's the deal.

It's all about your maximum heart rate. When you are at 60%, you burn mostly fat on your body, when it is at 80%, you burn more of what you have eaten just recently (carbohydrates). However, only the ratio changes. The *amount* of calories you burn increases dramatically.

The problem is this - while you would burn maybe 5x more fat running, say, 3 miles in 15 minutes (90% MHR) than 10 miles in 60 minutes (60% MHR), most people can't maintain that high heart rate long enough to equal what they can do over a long period of time.

Combine that with the fact that most people dislike the 'pain' that accompanies running, they wind up doing a good pace walk on ye ole' treadmill. It's not because they are choosing this way, it's because it's the only way that they can given their current limitations and lack of interest in overcoming them.

If you must do it, it's best on an empty stomach (like when you wake up) because then all you have to burn is fat. However, true empty stomachs aren't suppose to be what you work out with, so if you do it with your well-fueled workout, do it afterwards as being tired on the run is ok, but being tired during workout means you don't lift what you need to and don't tear the muscle fibers as well (which is your goal).

Wrong, you also have MUSCLE. All recent studies show that morning cardio on an empty stomach is a fastrack to muscle loss

Niles,

Some pros are obviously doing several things right--things, plural. DNP and thyroid go a LONG way toward getting ripped.

Reducing those guys' conditioning to cardio's fallacious for that and several other reasons. For a better idea of what kind of cardio's best, look for someone not taking clen, DNP et al. and who's following a maintenance diet. Ideally, find a naturally smooth/endomorphic guy.

If he can get significantly leaner via whatever cardio he does, it's definitely worth looking into. At the very least, his case would be much more useful than anything a pro does or advocates.

well ive seen natural guys do it also with this method and none of these drugs, it comes down to burning fat during the activity

It's definitely going to use calories, no question.

But the most important concern becomes the most efficient way to burn fat, does it not? (It is rather hard to go wrong with moderate-intensity, 45 min/daily cardio I think, but I can't say it's ideal.)
