progressive overload question

In Needsize's 5x5 does the progressive overload only apply to the main 5x5 exercise? Because I noticed that Needsize said his secondary exercises of 2 sets of 8-10 reps are to failure...so I cant see a set to failure going up 5lbs a week.

Needsize, remember telling you about my shoulders feeling day 1's workout? How about this??

Day 1 - Chest, Calves

Day 2 - Rest

Day 3 - Back, Shoulders

Day 4 - Rest

Day 5 - Bis/Tris

Day 6 - Legs

Day 7 - Rest


???? Do you think that day of rest on Day 2 would be okay between the chest and shoulders, or do you need that 2 straight day of rest between back, and arms?
