Please help, major tooth problem!!

I have a molar that broke over a year ago. I needed a root canal and never got one. Now the dentist says I need it pulled, It broke twice since then. Theres a little bit of a white tooth stickingup and the rest is flat decayed tooth. I can stick my finger nail down in it and feel a soft material, what is this?? I was scraping around and dug out soft material, anyone know what that is??

LOL, actually I'm not even in pain I was chewing on some hard ass candy yesterday when it broke again and I had just eaten right before so hopefully it was just food stuck in there. It didn't taste too bad BTW so hopefully thats what it was

Yeah you would think, I guess the roots are either dead or still covered by some of the tooth(or cheetos LOL) I've had exposed nerves before and thats gotta be the worse pain you pain you can experience. I have a dentist appointment in a week and a half now.
