pause squats

how much do you lower the weight when doing these? I normally have to stay as explosive as possible to finish the reps at the end of my squat routine....never tried them, sounds interesting, though I think I'd pass out or something if it was up there in weight...

rarely.

is it equally as effective and awsome?

No, but it's required for one's bench to actually count.

I think box-style squatting lends itself to a sort of pause-squat in itself... although I don't know exactly what "pause squats" are.

that's what I was thinking, box squats.

I started training my friend and he had to use a box (it's actually like a small stool) in order to squat his own weight at first, but improved drastically over a couple weeks....

i lower them as low as i squat normally...ass to grass.

i have a weak squat, mostly from weak core and hip flexors, but heres my squat went,

275x6, 315x4, 225x10, 185x10 pause for 2 or 3 (seems like a long time when your down there) and check my shorts to see if i can see my cawk coming out of my leg of my pants, then go back up

lol

we are similiar in the squat weight, I go ass to grass as well. I think I have week knees or something from so much football and basketball. The pausing just seems scary to me. I think I would injure myself. My knees used to hurt before I started doing ass to floor, it is much better in a fluid motion...

you would think that, but when your down there with so little weight its actually not bad on the joints/etc at all.

it just makes your ass hurt like shit, hurts so bad, and today sucks even worse

it also helps me with my form, in general. also helps you get used to chilling out down there with weight so when you go down there with higher weight it isnt so bad...helps me with my sticking point

That's why I started doing them.I'm the opposite of you, though. I have a relatively strong posterior chain. What I do is use one of those MantaRay attachments which raises your center of gravity- isolating the quads more. Doing my backoff sets this way after going heavy makes me feel as if I've gotten the most out of my workout.

Yeah, I look toward the free weight section and consider doing squats. Then, I pause and go drink a smoothie instead. ;)

Sounds like a static contraction in the fully stretched (or close) position? if so, AWESOME.

they have some animal studies where they induced hyperPLASIA (new muscle cells created) this way, also some human studies that showed a large % increase in mass and strength using ^ and/or negatives compared to standard concentric reps.

i'm no expert, but i've read that pause squats are bad on knees
a big part of the sq movement is the stretch reflex that helps get you outta the hole.
fuck it nevermind

cool.

immagine not using the stretch reflex and how much harder it would be?

try pause squats pussy.

if your form and musculature is good you wont hurt your knees

I believe pause squating can stretch the ligaments in your knees causing joint instability. IMO you can get greater benefits with box squats if you completely relax the hips, glutes, hams, quads, and then explode the weight up.
My squat totally sucks, so nevermind. LOL.

I prefer box squats but paused squats are very tough. Box squats are a god sent for my knees.

thats what someone told me about squatting below parralel.

when i asked them why the quad stretch (one where you pull your heel to your butt) doesnt do that, when your pulling your leg even further than that (or just as far), he proceeded to tell me about how that kind of stretching for the quad is outdated and deemed dangerous in the sports world.

when i asked for an alternative stretching method, he got down and sat on his feet and stretched that way doing the same exact thing pretty much

The difference between a quad stretch and squat should be obvious, namely the amount of weight that is on the knee during the movement. That being said I don't see any benefit that paused squats have that box squats don't.

okay, hater.

Sheesh, did every little bodybuilder out there jump on the box squat trend or something?

Do you guys use chains, too?

I never stretch beyond my normal range of motion. For the same reason; to prevent stretching the ligaments and distabilazing the joint. This applies to all joints.

When you train with a completely torn ACL you try and find ways to minimize the pain and damage done to your knees. I was pointed to box squats and never turned back. There are too many benefits.

Chains no. Bands yes.

Damn, bands are catching on, too?

Seeing as I've never personally seen anyone else use bands I don't think they are haha. Then again most people don't squat, deadlift, ohp, bentover row etc etc.

Yeah...same here... their loss, though!
