If god were 'just' why would he let humans suffer such pain? If god were intelligent, why would he create such confusion regarding his existence - by not showing up for 2000 years (and did he ever really show himself then!!??)

Gary you hit the nail on the head with religion, I do think there is something out there that we don't know about, but religion was brought about to control the masses, to brainwash them (seems a very successful process). Also it seems rather incongruous that the church has so much wealth and there are so many starving, ill and homeless. Surely every man of the cloth should give his all to his fellow man, no fancy robes, gold crosses, massive churches, rings, urns etc.

Everyone gets his in the end. What happens along the way is the true challenge. Pain represents many things. It could be a test of faith. Who knows. We humans tend to equate pain with "bad", but all pain really is, is a part of life...and it's up to us to figure out how to turn our so called "disadvantage" into an advantage...learn from it, to become a greater person than we used to be. Without pain, we would never grow.

A couple things here. We have free will to do as we please, so God didn't "create" the confusion. We did. If God made His existence so obvious, then we would have absolutely no reason not to follow Him, right? Wrong. Because there will always be people who deny even what their eyes and heart tell them. It's inevitable. It happened 2,000 years ago, and it will happen again. It's all a part of the struggle of life I suppose.

People back then believed the world was flat because that was what they were told. It was the norm that society instilled in them, and thus there was no reason to question it. Religion is more half-and-half I suppose. Many believe, and many don't. Thus, you are forced to be actively agnostic (all that really means is too question everything), to find your own answer for yourself. There is extensive soul-searching involved, much more than trying to decide if the world is flat or not.
