My wife is in Best Buy, in New York picking up Madden 08 for me. (GREAT WIFE)

The girl on Customer Service line does not speak ANY english. My wife is trying to ask her about picking up the game and she keeps speaking spanish.

Why would you hire someone who does not speak the language of the country we are in? I see the plus of hiring someone who speaks both but not english! WE ARE IN AMERICA AND ENGLISH IS OUR LANGUAGE! I hate people who do not speak English and work here in the US. LEARN THE LANGUAGE OR GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE COUNTRY!

i get haircuts at this asian barber shop, and they always talk to eachother in chingchanguage language, and last time i coulda sworn they were talking shit about me

like they were talking shit, and laughing while cutting my hair, and i looked at them so they saw roundeye and assumed english and accidentally said something like "bald but will grow back" and then she looks at me and realizes she accidentally spoke english and goes "right?"

im like wow, i wonder what the fuck shes doing to the back of my head

Since I grew up in a diverse society where everyone spoke English/ French/ Italian/ Greek and now Arabic I love hearing other languages.
YW, open up your mind, the US of A is more Spanish than it is English.

I agree with that since the US works in English and the person should have known English, but I've been in many little side street stores (we call them depanneurs here) that are owned by Koreans that speak no English. We make due and figure it out.

You should know the language if you live here. Its bullshit that they have the written part of driving tests in 7 different languages. How can you read street signs if you can't read English. When I go to Mexico, I speak in Spanish because it's Mexico.

That I agree with. My Polish grandpa had to learn French and English when he came to Canada.
Every immigrant from my day spoke French and or English, cept the Italian ladies who did not work out of the house
 
That's my point. It seems we are making easier for people not to learn the language. It today's world it should be eaiser for them to learn: DVD's, Seminars, Classes, etc... Back in the day you had to learn on your own and they did.
Learn or Leave is my motto! Wait till I run for President or atleast Mayor is 2012. The ones that don't speak, don't vote anyway!

I agree with you. However, I try my best to communicate with them because I know they have got to hate not being able to understand us as well. But I will only do it for so long then I get irritated

THANK YOU. I think this around the world. I would not go to Japan and expect them to know English. I would have to learn their language. Plus if I worked there....
 
Well Yonkers i do think there are some exceptions...

when my family first came to America we didn't know English either. But thats why they chose jobs that required minimal communication until their English improved

exactly! My mom and dad still work at places where there is macedonian people so they dont get in situation like that, even though they have a better command of the language now


when issues like this arise, I always think of how I would feel if something like this happened in my old country - if some fart from a land-of-a-different-language came to work at a public place and didnt know the language of the country he/she is working at. I would be furious. Seriously.
 
Geez, who cares. They are trying to make a living like everyone else. For all you know, they are trying to learn but they just got here. She is trying to work at an honest job and gets people screaming at her all day about speaking english. lighten up.

I can't think of a job she could do at BEST BUY (an electronics store, which requires a pretty fucking advanced vocabulary) that would not require mastery of the English language.

We are getting to the point where there are more people we are supporting than are working to support them (if you count welfare, low income housing, all other programs, and gov't employees who we also support. The freeloaders now have the majority voting power so their liberal candidates get elected and support more liberal government. Work, religion, being raised with common sense, loyalty to your country and town (how loyal is a hispanic who is not even a citizen) a work ethic, some idea of what is right and wrong by 2, or even 1 parent who present the good role model is becoming the exception. All of what made the country and makes each new democracy is being thrown out by the rulers who have to appease the new majority to keep their jobs.

They say that few democracies since the start of time have survived more than 200 years for that reason. In a nutshell, we got too many bad apple trees that we didn't spray, kill the bugs on, prune or cut down when we knew they were no good--because we felt sorry for them. We now have more bad apple trees than good apple trees in our U.S. orchard. And now we are asking the dumb question "Why do we now have more bad than good apples in this big orchard? Something in the bible about the good tree bears good fruit but the bad tree has to be cut down and burned? Enuff of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can someone become a citizen without being able to speak english? There is the first problem. Pretty soon this country will be too divided and uprooted to keep anyone happy.

i actually edited my post, i dont even think they should have to be citizens anymore! i think it's the governments job to filter out the illegals, not our businesses

I think I've said this too many times - one has to know how to talk, write and read english to be able to pass the citizen test (the Q's that they ask aside). My ex-coworkers husband ( a middle aged guy) opened up his citizenship interview with the words "I dont know good english" and immediately he was send home.

oh, then......an immigrant can work legally, regardless if they are citizens or not. They can do that with having a green card. :) Thats why a lot of legal aliens opt not to become american citizens and keep their old citizenship

My wife was a Spanish Major in college. She knows the language well and knows the difference between not speaking and an accent.
My wife would not humor her and speak it back.
