New to MMA

Well I have never been in a MMA fight but have been watching it sense I was about 6 years old. I have always love fighting and competeting in general. I was in football my entire life and Wrestled my freshmen-jr year of high school but dropped out due to legal trouble. I have been in many fights outside of a ring and want to get back into compact sports. I am a fairly good wrestler and can take a good punch. What should I start training in? Boxing? Brazilian JJ? Or just finding underground fighting? I am still only 19 but think I might be a potentially good fighter with some more training. What do you think I should do?

First and foremost, find a good school in your area---one that trains fighters specifically for MMA. In a perfect world, they'll have a BJJ coach, a boxing coach, and a Muay Thai or Kickboxing coach.

And example of a good school is here: Revolution Fight Team

You're young, you're eager, and you have some basics already. All you need to do is find a decent school/coach to train you. You hear the stories of "so-and-so" who amde it through underground means, but those guys are few and far between. You NEED to train along side guys who are training for MMA, and you need to be coached by guys who are experts in their discipline.

IF your not in a bigger center that can offer a school like that, you may only be able to find a school that teaches one discipline; personally, I'd opt for BJJ first, MT second, kickboxing third, and so on.

Where are you from?
Maybe some of the good bros onhere can point you in the right direction if we knew what part of the country you live in.

Like any sport you need to be in shape. Get your strength training and cardio in order before you start in any of the fight disciplines. It will speed your ability to develop. Also flexibility is key in many of the arts especially BJJ.

each art has + and -, you need to decide what works for you. Your body type will also help to determine what styles are most readily adaptable to your physique.

If you in the U.S, you should look at Team Quest, Miletich Fighting Systems or American Top Team, just to name a few. Any of these schools is a great way to start.

Well Detroit has plenty of Karate schools but I have no clue when it comes to MMA. Just got to look around. Have been busy lately. I am a wrestler at heart. I truely like the sport. I am not the best boxer.... from bullshitting around with friends but I can hit hard. Who knows with more training. Like I said all my fighting exspirence has came from the street.... NO RULES. I dont know how serious I will get with it... depends on how quick I pick it up. And I figure if it doesnt work out......just have that much more exspirence for the street. I can hang pretty good with cardio for as heavy as I am. Thanks guys.

theres a pretty decent School over in Windsor . THey train pretty hard and do Judo and Karate and have won a LOT of Full Contact Karate titles and now train MMA fighters ... Thats if you cant find anything closer , these guys are legit FullContact champions , and in your area .

thats Retarted . The system is Japanese (as is Judo , Jits , and Kyoku) Muay Thai is Thai ,ing is British (well , same Colour Scheme , I suppose) and So is Wrestling at its Roots . Your SKILLS are YOURS . If youre really that Bigotted I truly hope that you never learn how to fight with any skill .

Hahaha. Bro I never said I have anything against Canadians, Japanese, Britain, etc.... If I was going to train I would just train in america. And no I would not fight for a canadian team... because I am not canadian.

umm , the only Canadian Team is the Canadian NATIONAL team , and no , you wouldnt fight for them because yorue in the US . You dont Fight for a "Team" you have your own individual Fight record . Your skills are yours to earn and use and it dosent matter if you get them 4 miles over some Imaginary Political Line . The fact is that Madys from Lebanon or somewhere , so whats the difference , hes an Immagrant anyway ! There are no Team Records or Standings in Muay Thai , San Shou , KB , or MMA so it dosent matter . the only good MA in Detroit is Capoeira .
