Nelson's opinion on milk

I can credit milk to most of my weight gain in college. Would drink 4 glasses of milk for lunch/dinner. Stopped drinking after college for 3 yrs and became lactose intolerant.. Then started drinking milk again and don't have a problem with it.. Usually drink it 2x /day with my protein powder for shakes....

Milk does NOT help prevent osteoporosis.

So all those damn billboards i see on the highway are lying to me?

Do you believe every used car add???

They are playing on the fact that calcium will help prevent osteoporosis. Which is true but there are much much better forms of calcium. And calcium alone will not help prevent osteoporosis.

It is like saying that a bowl of cheerio's every morning will lower cholesteral.

Nautica,

Are you also saying the protein in the milk can't be digested or I am misunderstanding?

I am not saying it can NOT be digested, b/c we still have the enzyme pepsin in our digestive system. But without rennin and lipase it takes much longer.

If your goal is to put weight on - there is nothing wrong with milk. In fact the added calories will be great. All I am saying is that there are much better forms of protein and calcium without all of the fat.

Isn't the fact that milk protein takes so long to digest the reason it is such a good protein source. Long acting proteins provide a constant stream of protein to muscle cells as opposed to something like whey protein which is much faster.

Which is why whey protein is better for post workout when you're looking for protein quickly... and milk or animal based protein is better for most other times as it will stay in your system longer and therefore provide you more benefit.

Some people have a hard time digesting milk, others don't. Some take "lactaid" along with it and are fine.

The thing is this: milk protein isn't indigestable, but it does take a long time to digest, which is good and bad. Bad, because it lays in your stomach -- good because the nutrients are released slowly, making it somewhat anti-caatabolic.

Milk, like all dairy can smooth you out, so if you're cutting it isn't a great choice but I think milk is excellant if you're on a bulking program. Mixing your protein shakes with whole milk works like a charm for growth. After all, it is natures "growth food." Some people will say it makes them fat but if you're an ectomorph, it shouldn't be a problem.

Milk also contains lactoferrin, colostrum (tiny bit) and is pretty high in BCAA's. And if you want to believe what Rheo Blair said, lactose is the ultimate carb since it's animal in origin as well as highly insulogenic which forces ntrients into the bloodstream very effectively. (Another reason it causes growth?)

Besides, what else are you going to wash down the Detour bars with?
Ditto, good post.

Milk is certainly not "completely <in>digestible," but it does go through a fairly unique process after consumption. This is the source of much of the milk digestion controversy. In part, it literally rots in the gut. Sounds pretty bad, huh? The truth is that this process amps up the positive bacteria in your gut necessary for optimal digestion of foods.

Some people know outright that they are lactose intolerant and simply cannot tolerate milk without an aid. However, many are sensitive to lactose but fail to realize they have a milk allergy. If so, and cramps, gas, and bloating are not major symptoms, a smooth and soft appearance of the physique is to be expected.

I thnk milk is a great source of protien and carbs and fat. There are people who cannot handle milk, that being the case find another source. I will continue to drink milk and so will my kids.

Since we're on the milk issue what are everyone's thoughts on Lactaid? I don't mean the pills you pop when you drink milk, but the actual milk that's had the lactose removed? I just started to notice I'm becoming lactose intolerant at the age of 30 so I started looking for options. Found this kind of milk and it tastes the same and it doesn't cause me any GI problems so I'm in love with it.

I'm curious though if they remove the lactose then what type of sugar is left in it? And what type of GI does the milk now have because of that? The only dowside of this milk that I can find thus far is the price is a bit more than regular milk. However I don't drink it by the gallon so I don't go through them all that quickly.

Damn, im way below my daily protein level. What does soy milk taste like? and is Soy milk ok??

Personally, I love it. The american Soy Milk is much sweeter than the Chinese stuff, but I like both.

Everyone I know thinks it's fucking gross tasting, not just "okay" or "not that good," they really hate it.

Try out a small container to see if you like it.

You can get a lot of protein from egg whites. Eggs + wheat is complimentary protein, meaning that the amino acid profiles of the two combined is more suited for the needs of humans.

Also, soy milk and millk are complimentary, so go ahead and mix 'em up.
