I've read a visceral fat theory on this topic before - that constant cutting to barely viable body fat levels promotes deposits of stubborn visceral fat behind the abdominal wall to protect the internal organs.
Generally, there is a widely held belief that visceral fat might be a complication of insulin resistance. I can see that tying in here.
