Need help with computer/ virus

ortiz34

running XP media edition

Yesterday morning when I fired up my laptop I got a pop up box that my virtual memory is low and I closed it.
Anyhow ,since then it has been crashing using firefox or IE

I have run
AVG
Ad-Aware
and cc cleaner

all to no help

anyone that can help would be appreciated

100K to the person who fixes this son of a biatch problem

thanks

that's wierd...

My laptop was doing that shit all weekend. I shut it down, restarted, and haven't had another problem

problem is I have never even looked at porn on this computer

I have on my desktop but not this computer as it's my work comp

How much to clean or get a new HD for a laptop?

Also when I restart I get this blue reboot page for 2 seconds that wasn't there before

ugh:confused:

Have you looked at your virtual memory settings? Or your physical memory for that matter? Right-click on "My Computer" and select "Properties", does it still report the same amount of RAM that your system is supposed to have? This could be a hardware issue.

It says I have 31gb of free space and 24 gb of used space

trying to find where the ram space is

Mine runs slow at times too. Not sure why, I see a ton of shit running under Task Manager, but don't know what they are for so I just leave them alone.

Sometimes I will be waiting for 5-6 mins for a page to load and check the Task Manager and see something come System Idle Process at 98% or som.

What is your virtual memory set to? Use Task Manager to see what processes are using the majority of memory.

obviously defrag and clean up your disk (remove temp files and cookies).
Do you know how to edit your registry?

Just so everyone knows.... Do not open any e-mails, hell dont even turn your computer on. April 1st there are supposed to be some nasty virisus going around.... Norton wont save you either.

on xp how do I find virtual memory? thanks in advanced DT

start / run / taskmgr.exe ; hit enter. look for physical memory available. That's a more important number; should never fall below 500,000.

reporting 490.020

what can I do?
I don't have any files I care if I wipe out
how would you start by sweeping it clean?

how?
do I have to go to a store? Or can it be downloaded? lol

If you go to Memory upgrades, flash media, and usb storage at Crucial.com, you can order online from them. They have an online tester thingy that will look at your computer, tell you what you have, and give you all the specific memory upgrade options for your system. It's all done automagically, but you have to accept an activeX app from them. But it's one of the best ways I've found to get the right memory for your system, without making expensive mistakes.

You can order the RAM from them, but it's a physical product that must be paid for, delivered, and installed.

BTW Ortiz, when was the last time you used Windows Update, and installed everything on the list?

Ok hold up hold up!!!

Let's take it from the top, you are having a BSOD (blue screen of death) these contain info on what is wrong
Restart your computer and immediately start taping on F8 in the top of the keyboard, it will take you to a menu, scroll down and look for last known good configuration and press enter, if you get the blue screen again PLEASE write down the 0x000000.. sequence you will get BEFORE the parenthesis this will tell us what is going on, let me know
You may also go to Start-All programs- accesories-system tools-system restore and try restoring (rollback) to a date in which it worked
Do not upgrade or reinstall yet it's probably preventable....
Keep me posted!!!

Thanks for all the advice guys and gals. I am crossing my fingers that with what I have tinkered with so far, may have worked.
No crashing yet(knock on wood)

I just gotta figure out who to reward this Karma to, so much of you helped.
Will let it fly tommorow peeps

thanks again

I have not done that, should I?

Yes. All the security updates, the Malicious Software Removal Tool, you want that stuff.

Is your system set up to receive the monthly updates? (Little yellow shield next to the clock that pops up once/month...)

DO not use system restore. This is where most virus's reside. Turn it off in fact, it is useless. It sounds like you do have a hardware memory issue. Set your virtual memory to 1.5 times of what you have installed. If you have 512mb set it to 763mb and so on. It also sounds like a video card issue. As someone else said, if you are getting the BSOD please post the 0x0000 numbers.

spoke to soon
still crashing
basically getting the browsers (both IE and FF")error and needs to shut down"

only on certain sites though
this site is fine

also if I google certain virus help and what not, all these message board links pop up and when I click on them it takes me there for a second, screen is still blank and then redirects me to some random nothing sites.

Also I am not getting the blue screen
except for yesterday when I would start the computer

trying to run the new windows live one scanner right now

new windows live one care scan found 2 threats

one couldn't be removed

wtf

boot into safe mode and run it again, disconnect it from the network while in safe mode

and disconnect everything except the keyboard, mouse, and monitor

Try the free versions of AVG or spybot and scan again to see if they can fix it, the registry is pretty much like the spine of windows, don't get any registry "cleaner" and do not turn off system restore.... I'm actually a tech(Alienware) and your issue may be software related, if you add me to MSN maybe I can help a bit more [email protected] :)

Do you have any anti-spyware software, such as Ad-Aware or Spybot? If not, I'd download and install one of those. Of the two, I slightly prefer Ad-Aware, I think it catches some threats that Spybot misses. Adware 2009

Sounds to me like the same issue that I had on my desk top a while back. The trojan bastards got right into my registry, actually prevented me from being able to open my registry it was a fucking nightmare.

Look on your task manager and see which is taking up the most memory usage...Let me know (other than the norms firefox, etc)

I used Mcafee, norton, and windows live scan and nothing got detected, but that shit was still there!!!!! It was a major pain in the tushie.

ALSO- be careful when you click on software links from google as many of them are just adware that attaches to your comp and makes things more difficult. Stick to the main scanners I use lavasofts adaware for my comp with a back up of McAfee.

The couple of scans I have run have found two items and is "unable to remove one of them"

gonna run ad aware again

You may end up having to self remove, much like I did.

Tell me please, what type of computer are you running and what is in your task manager as far as higher memory usage?

wusb54gv24.exe is taking up the most volume besides firefox

what did you end up doing to rectify the problem with your computer

still crashing btw
mostly on the boston heralds website (BIG FAN)

it crashes on other sites too, don't want anyone to assume it's a glitch with their website

Anyhow are all programs in the task manager removable?

also that one I just listed is set to "high" when I right click it
the other ones in the top 7 are set at normal

Should I change it to normal setting and see how that goes?

I think I have a trojan

wtf can I do?

Never heard of that..Does it give you a description of it?

under username it's under "system"

It's taking up 60K in volume, while firefox is taking up 80K

Please download hijackthis and post your log here.

I'm not a "tech" anymore, just a lowy system egineer. But I have been through the trenches enough to find your issue.

You have also never told us what av or anti spy ware program you have. That will help. Aslo, what firewall, if any do you use?

I have made this post with my phone, so give me some time to reply.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm
Should be fixed/ removed!!! It seems to be adware as IE is usually filed as /blank.htmL not htm..

C:\PROGRA~1\AVG\AVG8\avgemc.exe
this folder is located in the wrong spot, if i am not mistaken. It should be in program/grissoft not in AVG, unless you have newest version of AVG then you should be fine.

ALSO
Update your IE as well as your java to newest version. Viruses and shit love java! And updating IE is good to ensure you have all security patches. Another thing dude, remove all your search tool bar shit, you dont need it..Go to control panel- add/remove programs and delete all of your search bars and tool bars even if they sound good such as yahoo, etc..They all attract yuckies.

symantec.com/search/

Do a search on that /blank. htm issue and see if they have a removal tool. You may need to upload active X or whatever it is called.

go to start and type msconfig (vista, if xp select run and type msconfig)
then select selective start up
the go to statup Tab in top and disable all
then go to services tab in the top and hide all microsoft services, after that disabled all left,
Select OK/Aplly whan prompted reboot

What this does is that it blocks applications from launching when you boot, therefore if any applications are clashing wwith eachother this will make it stop, if it solves the issue you can add them back one at time until you determine which is causing the conflict, if it doesnt help squat then you can re-enable them :)

OH FVCK!

I just wiped my entire desktop! I ran spybot and removed all that it said was infected

When I restart I get a small black blank box for a few seconds, then when it goes to my desktop there are no longer icons

I can't do shit now

had to restore to a earlier date to get back my whole desktop, There was nothing but the backround, no start button, nothing.
the windows button on the key board wouldn't work, crt alt del, etc, but I finally got it by restoring to yesterdays date.

I'm on the computer now so I'm testing it out and keep you posted
I'm gonna have to redistrubute the wealth on this one Obama style with the Karma prize. All of you have been great.

thanks

Agreed that the location is not the DEFAULT location. But if you installed to another place. (people will do this) there is nothing to worry about.

So I see that you are running AVG and Ad-Aware. if these two programs are up to date they will be good.

Not sure why you have the message queue server runing on your pc. (C:\WINDOWS\system32\mqsvc.exe) but if you do a lot with mIRC this will have to be on. But, be aware, it is also a known open port. Also the mqtgsvc.exe (C:\WINDOWS\system32\mqtgsvc.exe) is apart of the queueing program. But this executable will open and download apps without notifiying the user. This is a known trojan issue. I'm not saying yours is, but be aware.

The dllhost.exe program is what the old MSblaster virus piggy backed off of. (That was a great virus) This is not to say the dllhost you have is infected. It is a program that XP (you have XP Media center) needs to run. But..... This issue will cause your known shutdowns and restarts. (C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe)

Here is an issue with the browser HBO. R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = HP United States - Computers, Laptops, Servers, Printers and more

This issue is why your are getting forwarded to pages you do not want to go to. This is normally from a corrupt codec.

This will also install the BHO object R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = \blank.htm

Deleted these strings:

This will really only work for legitimate programs.

Novell is a operating system like Windows. What you have is Netware. Netware is the client side of the application. Is this a laptop that you have uses at work?

yes, it's a laptop

no real files saved or anything special on it

I eliminated those files from the log file but it still is crashing sparatically

There is another VB script you can run. It is called sient runners. It can be found here. Silent Runners - Adware? Disinfect, don't reformat!

Download the latest version and post the log.
I downloaded it but it was a major PITA to run, it didn't want to, tried all the start/run/recommendations he says and still couldn't figure it out.
I'm also still getting redirected to sites when I search and click on the links.

I have a virus on my computer I can't remove, but since a lot of viruses cause issues by messing up your registry,I bought a program called "uniblue registrybooster" and I run it every time I reboot. I have done nothing to be able to remove the virus (I get the same messages about being unable to remove threats), but my computer works free and clear as long as I keep up with that.

So Ortiz, any luck?

still crashing here and there and re directing me with searches but not super bad to the point where the computer is unusable

I think I am going to upgrade my ram anyhow

Thanks for all the help everyone again. I gave the prize to starhopper but hit you all multiple times for the help.

can I plug and play to add a new ram chip? Or will it wipe everything?

It's a 2005 HP paviliov dv6000 running vp media center

OK, here's the info:

Your PC uses DDR2 PC2-5300 667Mhz SODIMM, and it only has 2 memory slots

The PCs were designed to run at 2GB Max, BUT some support 3GB depending on if its INTEL or AMD, the Santa Rosa/Intel ones support 3GB max, the AMD support 2GB max

So....

If yours is intel you can have 1 memory module of 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667 Mhz Sodimm and another memory module of 1GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667 Mhz Sodimm

If it's AMD you can have 2 memory modules of 1GB DDR2 PC2-5300 667 Mhz Sodimm EACH

Whereever you buy the ram make sure it says SODIMM which means it's made for laptops

If you want to be 100% sure it will work on your PC you can use this one (cheapest one at buy it now price)

So was I running at 1gb originally?

I bought two of the sodimm 1 gbs at crucial

so I just plug them in and I am good to go?

How much of a difference am I going to notice?

I'm not quite sure how much u bought it with, to check go to the start button, right click on computer and select properties, there it will tell you how much ram you have, please let me know ASAP because if you already have 2GB then you may need to cancel the ram u ordered....

Hmmmm.... odd....
Well the 2x 1GB modules will work just fine, when u get them turn pc off, remove charger and battery, then remove the bottom panel and there is the ram, they are in 2 slots and have latches on each side, just push them and the card will pop up in a 10 degree angle, pull straight out and put new one in, push down until latches snap. place cover, charger and battery back on, and your set ^_^

Not only do I feel protected against viruses, but since I installed it onlto my computer , it tells me when I hi t a bad site. It's real good. I wish you the best of luck in etting hthis figurd out.
