Hey ladies.... I need your help. Im a recovering bulimic/anorexic and i gave up alcohol completly because it interferes with my medicine (blessing in disguise ;) but then my next vice became cigarettes. Im excessive in everything i do. I train hard and eat pretty well....but i ve been smoking a pack every other day of ultra-lights for a month and a 1/2...and decided today they were nasty and wanted to quit...but im beginning to feel they're "power" i went n got more =( i was so disappointed in myself. I need another reason other than the obvious ones to motivate me to stop! i basically need to hear they'll slow down my fat burning or atrophy my muscle! Please any insight would help!!! TIA

hey welcome... I am in the same boat as you.. I am extreme in everything that I do and I also suffered from bulimia/anorexia . I also smoked when I was younger. I just decided one day I didn't want to do it anymore and that was it... you have to put something else in that time period that you would usually smoke.. distract yourself... but really I believe smoking is one of those things that you will continue to do until you really decide in your heart you no longer want to do it

Your absolutely right! The prob with me is i ve been out of a job for 2 months,, so in the evenings i sit at star bucks with friends and chat smoke and java it. I figure i atleast made the first step in WANTING to stop. But i feel if i had reasons that would delay my progress in tha gym it might help me motivate more!!

The death of both my parents due to smoking & the horrible suffering they endured should give you enough reason to quit.

Can you imagine yourself so addicted to cigarrettes that when you're 68 & on permanent oxygen that you're sitting there puffing away while the oxygen is ON cuz you can't breathe without it??

yeah jens right... I used to take care of a fellow that smoked still in his 80's and had to walk around with an oxygen tank... sounds like your smoking cause your bord.. go for a walk with your friends instead.. you have to switch it up

My grandfather just died a few weeks ago from cancer in his lungs, from smoking, I went to see him, and he was so skinny, and had all sorts of tubes in him, he couldn't breathe, he kept gasping for air.

Also my grandmother has had 2 heart-attacks, she almost died. The doctor has been telling her she needs to stop smoking because it is killing her, but she says she can't. She apparently would rather die than stop smoking.

You say you train and eat right, so you know how to care for your body and know how important your health is, so why would you knowingly put poison into it.

Our bodies are our temples and should be treated as such.

It makes your breath & clothes smell, gives you wrinkles, Stains your teeth, smells up your home & furniture, gives you bad breath---stunts your growth(slows metabolism)causes the arteries to harden, shortness of breath, causes strokes & high Blood Pressure.

Oh - and if you're thinking "None of these stories, experiences, etc will EVER happen to me" think again. My mother's lung doctor was one of the best in the US & he said that ANYONE who smokes will get some sort of illness from it. And you don't know how truly bad emphysema is until you see someone who has it gasping for breath & they can't - yet when they finally do - they light up a cigarette. Pathetic!

And do you truly enjoy a MAJOR company with a deadly product having complete control over you and your health?

find something to replace it....

I dont have anoreixa/bullimia.. but have had a bad habit i had to replace

If the health things don't get you, how about this.....

Because even IF you reach your goals and have (what you consider) a "perfect body" and everything is exactly whree you want it ...... you will look and feel like CRAP because smoking is disgusting, foul, and gross. NOBODY "looks good" smoking.

Smoking discolors your teeth, makes your skin leathery and wrinkled, and speeds up the aging process.

Aside from what everyone else has mentioned, it's also downright RUDE! Eat unhealthy and be overweight, fine. Drink excessively, fine. Those don't harm others in the same room or place. But smoke? Not only are you killing yourself, but it's having an effect on me and other innocent people too, and that just crosses the line--the health of others shouldn't have to suffer because of your unhealthy decisions. (I'm not pointing fingers at you, there are some smokers who do handle their addiction in a "polite" manner and only smoke at home, or they go outside. But there are many who don't. And even people who are more courteous still smell like smoke.)

I'm glad I live in NY where smoking is not permitted in public places. I can't go out to bars or restaurants that permit smoking in other states, though, because even the slightest bit really bothers me.

Like i said above u have to find something healthy to replace it with..

I have ADHD.. associated with that is OCD which i have always been able to control thank god... but how i have done it is i repalce bad habits.. with less conspicuous ones....

Might sound odd..but honestly it works.. it takes 21 days to develop a habit.. for 28 years i had a bad habit.. when i told my neroligist about it ( the doctor who i see for my ADHD), he suggested replacing the habit with a new one.. i thought he was nuts... but funny.. it work.. now i put on lipgloss 24 7.. but it is much better than the alternative...

Requires will power

I got this from a site, I know the ladies have mentioned some of these above.

Reasons Not to Smoke (You know them...)

* Cancer Risk!!! - Lung cancer kills more women than breast cancer every year in the U.S.

* MONEY! It’s expensive (over $1000 a year for a pack a day, an estimation, it can be more)

* Bad breath -- others do smell it

* Stained teeth and fingers

* Cough/sore throat

* Breathing problems

* Fatigue

*Wrinkles (more, sooner than people who don't smoke)

* Arguments with parents, friends who want you to stop smoking.

* Heart disease risk, including heart attack, no you’re not too young.

*Gum disease risk

* It stinks up your clothes, hair, skin, car, pets, it goes on and on...

* Cigarette burns on your clothes or in the house, car, wherever

* Risk of second hand smoke to people around you (and your pets too)

* Nonsmokers don’t like kissing smokers. There is nothing sexy about smoking.

Very good post!!

I'm glad DE has also passed the non-smoking laws - it's nice to not have to deal with the smokers & the smell!! Ugh!!

Other than the reasons mentions, I think this is most important to me... how would you like to look 3-5 years older (or more) due to premature aging because of tobacco???

You will quit smoking when you realise that not one single one of the reasons you have for actually smoking is any kind of a reason at all. Every cigarette you smoke creates the desire for the next. So simply don't smoke this one now, then you won't crave another in ten minutes. You can stop smoking without a single craving, a single ounce of weight gain, or a single glance back. Every day you wake up you will be filled with the joy of knowing that you are free from the shackles of a dirty, ugly addiction, and from the clutches of big tobacco, who lie and manipulate at every turn.

Read The EasyWay (for women) to quit smoking - I can't remember who the author is, but he has trademarked easyway. You'll quit by the end of the book and never look back. And no, I am not in this person's employ - I simply am filled with the joy of never having to smoke again - and I quit several years ago. My training and my health simply became much more important than the idea that I might "crave" tobacco, or the stupid fear that I "needed" it to cope. What crap. It's a powerful drug, designed to enslave you and then kill you.

Do you still need motivation?

WOw =) im so thankful for all the feedback! I'd be an absolute moron to keep it up now. It may be vain...but the main reminder of why to stop is simply leathery skin and wrinkles...haven't had anyone in my fam have problems resulting from smoking so thats hard to make reality for me. But i really appreciate all your in put. Truely it's out of boredom, or was, now i ll just have to work a little harder at fighting the urge. You guys rock ;)

If you know there are places you go, such as to drink java, that cause you to want to smoke - DON'T GO. Just explain to your friends what your trying to do. Maybe they'll even go somewhere that is NON SMOKING so that you can't smoke at all! Wouldn't that be great? Yah, I know, some people just don't care, but hey, it's worth a shot, right?

I believe nicotine is stored in fat cells, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I remember hearing/reading that somewhere.

Over Labor Day weekend, I spent 3 days at my mom's house. She and her husband both smoke like chimney's (sp). I had to keep my bedroom door closed to keep my clothes from stinking like smoke. Even then, when I got home and opened my suitcase, it about knocked me over. My fiance was standing there and he had a FIT! I was so sick of smoke going up my nose by the second day that I really wanted to ask them not to smoke around me - but it was their house - couldn't really do that.

I quit smoking 2 years ago in October. I quit one day and never so much as touched another one. Sometimes I still dream about it and in my dreams - I smoke sometimes. But I know EVEN IN MY DREAM that it's just a dream and not reality. Maybe I'm wierd, but it's true....anyway......

Don't put yourself in the line of fire! Stay away from places you know will cause the temptation, and maybe give MissFit's alternative a try. Sounds like a good one. Find something to do with your hands, if boredom is the problem, working with your hands will ease it.

Good Luck!

On the radio this morning, it said that people who smoke 3-4 a day vs a pack a day have the same risk of getting cancer.

This helped me all the times I've stopped (I've had three major quits in my life, hopefully third time's a charm):

What Happens When You Stop Smoking?

When you stop smoking, your body begins to heal itself. If you're thinking about stopping smoking, you should know:

20 minutes after your last cigarette
Blood pressure drops to normal.
Pulse rate drops to normal.
Temperature of hands and feet increases to normal.

8 hours after your last cigarette
Carbon monoxide level in blood drops to normal.
Oxygen level in blood increases to normal.

24 hours after your last cigarette
Chance of heart attack decreases.

48 hours after your last cigarette
Nerve endings start to regrow.
Ability to smell and taste is enhanced.

72 hours after your last cigarette
Breathing becomes easier.
Lung capacity increases.

2 weeks to 3 months after your last cigarette
Blood circulation improves.
Walking becomes easier.
Lung function increases up to 30%.

1 to 9 months after your last cigarette
Coughing, sinus congestion, and shortness of breath decrease.
Your body's energy level increases.
Your lungs are better able to fight infection.

5 years after your last cigarette
Lung cancer death risk decreases.

10 years after your last cigarette
Lung cancer death risk drops.
Risk of other cancers drops.

My father died of emphysema. Like Jenscats, I had the joy of watching him light up a cigarette AFTER pulling the oxygen mask off his face ... he never moved, of course, so he was sitting next to a 5' tall oxygen tank with an open flame, with his daughter in the room, what a sport. And even after watching him die, slowly, horribly, I still smoked over a pack a day of Winstons or Marlboros from age 17 to 27, then again from age 30 to 33 then one more time for a few years ... the last two times I quit cold turkey.

More reason to quit? How about why should you enrich the pockets of the tobacco company for the privilege of killing yourself? Seriously! Think about the side effects of smoking: it smells utterly foul (I can smell a smoker from more than ten feet away; why bother bathing and using perfume, you make yourself smell worse than a refinery when you light up), you cut your wind like you wouldn't believe, it costs serious amounts of $$. Think about the fact that you're a slave to tobacco: you have to plan EVERYTHING around it, going to a museum, going out to eat, going on a long trip. Smoking hasn't got ONE beneficial side effect: it tastes like shit, gives you headaches, makes you prone to getting colds, bronchitis, and sinus infections, and no, it doesn't calm you down on its own, you're calmed when you smoke because you've fed the monkey on your back. You'd be that calm if you weren't addicted in the first place.

Weight gain??? Forget it, it's hype. If you remain active and don't increase your food you don't have to gain anything.

Three days, I'm telling you, 72 hours tobacco free and you're home free ... if you really want it. You just have to decide you hate them, and you're not going to let them kill you any more.
