My Son Just Got a Job Offer...

Many years ago my son told me that he didn't want to go to college. I understood, but I told him that I'll be damned if I'm going to have a son who makes a career out of working a parts counter in a auto parts store or a Walmart greeter. I told him that he should consider a technical institute to learn a skilled trade or go into the military like I did.

He opted for military and did 6 years active in the US Navy as a Hull Technician, specifically an NDT (Non Destructive Tester) inspecting welds on submarine hulls using radioactive source material...a very technical job that one must test and pass exams to be accepted.

He got out of the Navy a bit less than 2 years ago and after taking mindless, boring jobs at low pay decided to see what he could get using his military training. I helped in with his resume and he sent out a few.

Last week, Northrup-Grumman (world's 4th largest defense contractor) offered him a job starting at $63,000/year.

Yes...I am proud of the boy.

That's awesome man, thats a very special offa

Damn straight I'm gonna brag about the boy. Not too many 26 year old kids can land a job like that. He's taken his first step towards a career that is going to set him up for life. I don't know if I could get any prouder of the boy.

sounds great...hubs went this route and also landed a job with a defense contractor ...then got his degree
your son will probably be thrilled for a bit especially if hes always worked menial jobs
I know my husband couldnt believe it when they gave him a corporate amex and laptop cuz he had always worked shitty jobs that barely had health insurance

That's awesome! It's a hard lesson to learn to listen to dad but he always knows best. He'll have a good future there.

I went the same route after the army, worked for general dynamics land systems, now I work for the dod.

how is it set for life?

Fucking Awesome. From a Turd Chaser to a NDT Tech to a Contractor. He should really apply for a GS position while he's with Northrup
NDT is in high demand. Congrats

LOL! You know the slang for HT's! Too funny. Yeah, my son made the right decision to apply and test for NDT. They are indeed in high demand. In fact, the Northrup-Grumman offer comes on the heels of a previous offer that wasn't quite as lucrative. Truth be told, my son is a bit overwhelmed but I told him that in this economy, he should be glad he's overwhelmed as there are a lot of folks out there that would give their left nut for a salary like that.

Interestingly enough, when I steered him toward the military, I had machinations that he'd become a Navy Diver. The kid is a natural SCUBA diver. He's the best diver in the family but his reasoning was "I don't want to do it Dad because I love diving, but if I did it for a living, I might end up hating it." Truth be told, I wouldn't argue that point. Regardless, he's made some good decisions and is now reaping the rewards.

He just got notified today from the HR Rep at Aero-Jet in Rancho Cordova that they've FedEx'd a job offer. This is actually his 3rd job offer and the HR person asked to see his offer from Northrup (which he produced)...

This job would be a 10 minute commute vs. a 2 hour commute. The offer will arrive tomorrow.

hubs doesnt say hed give his left nut anymore for anything...cuz someone made him pay up...jus sayin

be careful what youre willing to offer up

Wow! Wut a great trade.

Still think he should pursue a fed gov't career.

They actually offered a NDI course in the vo-tech here in N.O. but it was dropped.

Apparently it would take the average N.O. public school grad too long to gain the requisite technical skills to ever becum certified.

It's "figure of speech" Shirlene. Out here, the economy is severely depressed. A 26 year old person entering the job market is almost unheard of. We have college grads that can't find jobs.

I know its a figure of speech...the other half would say "I'd give my left nut for [ want here]" and then he had to pay the piper...with his left nut! its gone!..ok ...well half of its still there...but still

eh...youre too new...
buncha peeps here know the story

play through

What a truly fucked up thing to say...Like you're any better than anyone else, right?

I'm much better. And at the very least someone from another country who doesn't speak our language and doesn't have a clue about proper safety culture should stay in there own country eating dog and living in mud huts instead of working in heavy industry

I'm glad you're Canadian. I retract my well wishes for your recovery. You are truly a despicable human being...And calling you a human being is a compliment. Don't cross me again. I will destroy you...but I doubt you would have the intellectual prowess to recognize a subtle insult...so carry on.

I wood do unspeakable acts for $63k/year

I'm glad I'm Canadian too. I think all of us are much happier being Canadian than American. So go ahead and destroy me with your superior intellectual powers.

cept the part of freezing your cawk off the majority of the year

Anything in oil and gas. Any trade that has an industrial sect to it. Rock truck driver at Albian sands makes 140k a year. That's a one month course

Typical ndt tester in Alberta makes around 100k a year ... Tell your son to look for a job in Alberta they have shift work with great benefits....

lotta squids up in here

im goin to bed before my feet get wet

Say no more.

Dude, u need not get so butt hurt in c&c. Half of everything in here is bs and too much test. Although I do think to work in a country u should have a base understanding of the countries language. Otherwise Canada could never supply all the workers we need. And in 10 years we will need double the employees. Every major oil company in Canada is in expansion mode right now. Also I have significantly more schooling than grade 8. And I'm sure philipino's rarely eat dog or live in mud huts. They just want to work and support there families like everyone else. I have had many work for me.

Your grammar belies a different message, but I am willing to forgive that. For you to retract your previous racist comments begs the question..."why"? It's nice to know that you've had many philipinos work for you though. Perhaps you can sleep better at night. Maybe I need to employ more Mexicans to find redemption.

Tell your son to look for a job in Alberta

I appreciate it, but I couldn't do that in good conscience if I knew he'd be working amongst people that feel that foreigners that speak different languages and have different cultural habits were considered 2nd class citizens.

I raised my son differently.

Dave, its pretty common for people to trash talk in this section of the site..no one usually means it
everyone sort of "trolls" each other

Sometimes I have real convos. Sometimes I just try and get a rise out of ppl. It's what c&c was all about. Sometimes an inside joke posted online for everyone to see will rub a few ppl the wrong way. Being albertan another person from here would laugh and say those damn phillys. I do realize very few of u are from here and will react like that. I guess I'm just bored being bed ridden in acute care and whacked out on narcotics with nothing but my phone to play with. All in all just relax or you might get butt hurt more than you need to be.

And I'm going to call you a liar. I was raised to treat people with respect...something that may seem foreign to you. That being the case, I was taught to not say something unless you mean it. Your initial comment toward foreigners tells me that you truly are a racist bastard and your folks have probably taught you that. Am I "butt hurt"? LOL Please...You're pablum in my book (you may have to look up that term...go ahead...I'll wait). You just need to grow up and be taught some manners. Pfft...."butt hurt" I was engaging in forum dialog when you were pissing your diapers son ( Yes...I am an IT professional that ran Mosaic. FTP, SSH...name it...back in the eighties)

This world needs more people with manners.

Bro... This is Canada .... Everyone here is from somewhere else...don't let one guy form your opinion.... 75% of the people in Alberta are from somewhere else and moved here for the great job opportunities...I work 2 weeks on and 2 off.. I also get 3 weeks vk.. That's 29 weeks off a year!!!.... Still made 160k....it's a great life... Every camp has a gym and they feed the shit out of you....!!...just give it some thought ....

i didn't run dick when I was young & I don't run dick now

I'm a fucking slacker :(

I really don't care one way or another what country someone is from as long as they are competent workers. And being the first Canadian born person in my family no my parents were not racist. fuck I miss Plank and Weakmo. This place is way too serious. But like my ngr above me said. The coin is legit. Most camps have standards and are pretty sweet these days. It's pretty hard to make less than a 100k up here.

I love to hear good news like this. It's tough for kids out there these days. Even with college or military background. I've had great luck hiring ex military guys, and would try to get them for their discipline and just because I appreciate their service. Its pretty pathetic to see a good kid come looking for a job who has just served his country and no one will hire him.

Anyway, NDT testing is good experience to have. To tie it in to what other people have said about the oil and gas business, there is a lot of NDT testing that needs to be done in gas plants and refineries for mechanical integrity programs. Its the kind of experience that lends itself to starting one's own business. Almost all those facilites use 3rd party contractors for NDT testing. Get set up to be the contractor for a few facilities and you would be making huge bucks. Oil companies pay out the ass for that kind of service. To do it right you would need to be able to analyse the data and get a pressure vessel inspector cert etc, but its all doable, looking at the big picture.

Indeed. And it just got better for the boy. He got an offer from AeroJet based out of Rancho Cordova, CA yesterday. Here's the gig...

If he took the job at Northrup, he'll be earning 63K/year and looking at a round trip commute of 4 hours/day (they can't live in Silicon valley or the East Bay and I don't blame them. We come from the East Bay and I worked in Silicon Valley...It flat out SUX).

That being said, AeroJet "fast tracked" my son after they knew he had an offer and put an offer in front of him at 60K/year....BUT!!!!

He can live in Rancho Murietta with a lower cost of living that the East Bay. He'd have a 10 minute commute, and he'd be only 30 minutes away from us as opposed to 2 hours.

Not to mention that he'll be working on projects for heavy lift payload boosters in Aerospace.

Darn kid has had 3 job offers in the past 2 weeks in an economy like this. Yes...color me proud.

It sounds like an easy decision to stay near home and have an extra four hours a day of free time. 4 hours is like a half a vacation day every day!

There is nothing like the feeling of seeing your kid do well. I look forward to the day my oldest gets his shit together and there is a bright future ahead of him. right now, the future looks kind of murky. :worried:

Northrop is a solid company, but this decision looks easy to me...

Congrats man! this is great to hear
