My older half sister is a brilliant, published college professor, very eccentric, and a single mom of 2 boys. One has always been a bit of trouble, has mental problems, etc. The other one is movie star gorgeous, bright, charming, etc.

He just got back from Iraq and started hanging out with a girl that turned out to be a prostitute. I think he did some IV drugs. Well, now he has hepatitis C. It breaks my heart. What a shame. This kid could have the world by the tail. I always told him he should run off the Hollywood and be in movies. He's as cute as Brad Pitt.

1/2 sister - so you guys share the same Dad?
yes, same father. she was from a marriage before my dad married my mom.

I feel really badly for her.

What is gross? hepatitis? IV drugs? prostitutes?

Gross, maybe, but it is a done deal now. Sad thing is that now he is with a really nice, straight laced girl and was getting ready to go back to college and straighten up his life. He just found out he has hep.

I think hep c ruins your sex life doesn't it? And isn't it like dangerous for later in life or something? It's not good to have for whatever reason and having it sort of implies having done something sketchy - I'm sure you can get hep c without doing iv drugs or prostitutes but it's got the stigma attached. It's like having an STD that will never go away and you can always give to your partner. Yay. I think it might fuck up your liver too.

Well, he did all the above: IV drugs, sex with gf who had been a prostitute, etc.

Yes, it can fatally damage the liver. Many people don't live long, but, like with HIV, the treatment has gotten much better and many live a LONG time on drugs. He will have to take drugs forever now. In a way, it is as bad as having HIV.

I'm sorry to hear it heather. That really sucks for the kid.
yeah, you know, everyone does stupid things at some time in their life. some get away with it, and others have something happen that can never be fixed.

hep c is one of the worst diseases that you can get!!... though there are meds you can take to help and nearly clear it from th system... I say nearly because you will always have it... but you cna beat it down to an undetectable amount in the blood and thus be as close to back to normal as you can get... however you will want insurance... which if not already purchased you're more than likely shit outta luck!! especially should it getto the point of needing a transplant... because in the US no insurance, no transplant... they won't even do a transplant if you have alot of tats off subject but interesting!! once the liver starts to go it's a fuckin nasty process!! I had someone very close to me have to go through a liver transplant because of hep c a few years back!!! and even should you have insurance, you don't get a liver until you're next to death!! literally!! they give the transplant to the one who needs it most and if you aren't on short time... you don't get bumped to the top!! some of the things that come with liver failure are jaundice which is yellowing of the eyes the skin becomes a strange shade of green. the body has trouble processing calcium and your teeth become brittle and break away, same with your fingernails. no9t to mention getting down to skin and bones!! it's not a way any body would want to go, trust me!!!

side note, they are doing living donor transplants these days due to the liver's wonderful ability to regenerate... which is pretty cool!! and the heal time for the donor is actually pretty quick!!

I have a good friend w/ Hep C, he is getting along well, unfortunately he cannot take interferon (SP) so he has other meds that have different sides and shit. but for the most part, he is normal as can be....

sorry to hear that HR.....

I think that he still has insurance because of being a soldier.

I'd be curious to hear about how it affects the donor and what is done. Do they take a chunk of a healthy liver and have it grow into two new ones - one in the donor repairs itself and goes back to normal whereas the dude who got the transplant then grows a new liver from the chunk? That'd be cool. I'm not seeing how you can live without a liver though,

Ive never heard of that. They can generate a liver from a portion of someone else's liver? Wow! That is news to me.

There are so many things out here that can help people that are living with Hepatitis C.

Look at Pamela Anderson. You just have to be very careful with the things you put into your body. Many of the over the counter drugs are not good if you have Hep C. There are many other things as well, that is just the first thing that popped in to my head

Hep C is spread through the transmission of bodily fluids and is essentially liver disease. He will need to make a change in his diet to avoid the foods that his liver will not be able to metabolize resulting in the further pollution of his body.

I've had hep C for about 20 years
never been sick and my liver enzymes are only mildly elevated
just had bllod work last month and they're the same
hell I had quit drinking for 9 years and twice my liver enzymes spiked a bit during my sober period
and in my 5 year resumed drinking career their as low as ever

hep C is over vilianized imo
the doc tuesday told me he has a couple dozen hep C patients and none of them have had any problems
some opt for the treatment just to rid themselves of it
but it's quite a debilating treatments that takes weeks/months
so I'm not concerned

and it's virtually impossible to get it sexually
the CDC doesn't even regard it as an STD

the chances are around 2% in 50 years
so if you have regular sex with a partner with hep c for 50 years
you have a 1 in 50 chance of contracting hep c
I haveother to worry about

Right! I was trained that it is really very hard to transmit it sexually.....BUT with IV drug use it is very common

yeah that's basically it except they only have it grow into one new one... if I recall correctly they take 60% of a healthy person's liver (if they pass all the required matching) take out the unhealthy liver put in the 60% chunk and it begins to grow fully functioning and the donor is back to normal within six months or so... and pretty good to go after 3... the details are a bit fuzzy now as I said it was a few years ago... but that is jist of it!!

but yeah it's pretty cool stuff!! :)

btw spart glad to hear that your hep is treting you kindly... it doesn't with everybody and I've seen first ahnd the nastiness it can bring!! so cheers to good health!!

How bad is it? Needto's bro has it and he is fine. I mean obviously he cannot drink or drug anymore, other than that he is good..they have meds for it, you know?
Hey, I am sure my brother has that along with aids..I wouldn't be shocked!!!
He was the only one to graduate and the only one who looked to have a promising career...But NOPE thrown away by drugs...

Well, I just found out so I'm not sure how bad it is. They have him on meds and he has to quit drinking. He had already quit the drugs. Hopefully, he will be okay.

Diseases are the worst, especially incurable ones. Yeah HR is right, lots of people do stupid shit and some don't get away with it. Although illicit IV drug use is really stupid. Even juicing if you don't have a factory sealed needle. Too bad he learned to hard way.
