My grip training

I just got my heavy grips today.

Here are my results:

100 lbs gripper:

45 reps right hand
43 reps left hand

150 lbs gripper:

27 reps right hand
22 reps left hand

200 lbs gripper:

5 reps right hand
4 reps lefthand

250 lbs gripper:

3/4 rep right hand
0 reps left hand

300 lbs and 350 lbs gripper - keeping those sealed in the box. too early to take out. maybe in 4-6 months.

I used to use a lot of grippers to work out my hands. However, I got the best results from deadlifting on a 2" smooth bar (no knurling) with a double overhand grip. If you haven't yet, I highly suggest giving that a try.

Grippers are crap IMO. I don't think i can even close the 2 of the CoC yet i can run with 370lbs in each hand.

yeah, i dont think they have much carry over for weightlifting though i do them cause its better than nothing i guess. for mma i bet youll see a big difference when grappling and submissions.

btw youll be killing that 250lb gripper in no time

how often you guys use em?

I keep different strengths in my truck, office and car.

my gym has no fat bar

Dave-what strength are you up to?

i was doing them twice a week. havent been using them regularly, but after about 6 weeks when i first got them 6 months ago i came within 1/8-1/4" of closing a COC#3 which is 280 but 1/2" wider than the heavy grippers. the 250 H.G. was really pretty easy after a while

I can close the HG 250, but it doesn't really carry over to deadlift grip strength, it might work to grappling and MMA related stuff though. I think the ones Alc is talking about are HG, not really the COCs, COC's are very accurate, but HGs aren't which means you can have like 2 250lbs HGs and one of them might be easier than the other.

One thing Traz grip training with heavy grippers should be limited to low reps per set because you may develop joint issues due to repetitive patterns inherent to high rep training, the hands might be small but it's still a multiple joint exercise, so shit can happen... but you can work on your grip eod and with static holds, inverting the gripper position etc.

its a different kind of gripping. static holding is different than active clamping/crushing.

both are important but active gripping is much more important in the fighting sports than it is in strongman

Training with grippers makes you good at closing grippers. I seen no carryover when I trained them regularly.

Guys, I can assure you that training with grippers DOES carry-over to sports.

I am looking to compete again in armwrestling and to start fighting again as soon as I get the minimal training time / gym time in Canada

I did a few local gigs in armwrestling back home and I love it...and I did some fighting

I know for a fact that it helps your grip

My goals with hand grippers:

1- Develop a crushing grip, i.e. be able to crush almost any guys hand in a handshake

2- Have a really strong grip when gripping someone's Gi (jujitsu)

3- have a really strong grip in wrestling tosses and holds

4- Deadlift heavier without straps

5- Heavier shrugs without straps

6- Get stronger forearms / wrists / hands / fingers for armwrestling

This is a very helpful post. Thanks bro.

I have those grippers, good stuff. Not as strong per lb as the CoC, but I really like them a lot!

Helping with sports, especially arm wrestling...FOR SURE!!!

It can help with strongman events if you take a gripper and crush and hold it for time. Those are tough. Take the 200 and try to keep it closed (or as closed as you can) for a stopwatch count of 60 seconds. Makes you hate yourself...lol

me too, Im about to pm you about this...

I like the grippers because I had a weak grip and they helped me turn it into a strong-point. I used to always use straps, now I can chin all I like, deadlift, clean and row as much weight as my back can lift without having to worry about the grip. The grippers help break down the mental barrier.

I've closed a COC2 with each hand, but can't get near a 3 yet! The again I've seen Felix Light from WSM working with the COC3 and when he first got it he couldn't close it either!

Thanks a lot man!

I'll try that tonight.

P.S. I just closed the 250 lb gripper in my right hand once this morning :D
