My friends pulse rate

raze

New member
My friends pulse rate is around the 100 mark rested, he is not currently taking any aas and never has. When we were training last night we had a look to see what it had jumped too and it was 130. His BP is quite good just a racy pulse. He is not super overweight or anything. Hes 24 years old. Is it dangerous letting your plse climb up too 130? Were only doing weights at this stage no cardio because im concerned about pushing him to hard.

Ya 130 should be fine. IF Im not mistaken that would be more of a fat burning heart rate, instead of a higher cardio improving heart rate.

ok cool, i have only recently brought a bp monitor and while i train weights i hit 68ish and rested about 54. all learning curve thanks for the response, appreciate it.

your heart rate only goes up to 68ish while training? what the hell.

How long of breaks do you take in between sets? Your heart rate should be climbing more than 68 bpm if your training hard. I would think a single set of hard squats would get it over 100. Not sure what your doin thats keepin it so low during training

>100 easy...
68 is like doing nothing, no matter how low resting pulse is.

130 from running or sprinting is low man however 100 for resting is quite high... Somewhere along the way the numbers seem skewed...

My resting is about 42 but that is because of the amounts of cardio i do... 60 - 80 resting is about avg for resting... If hes 100 resting then when he works out hard i would thibk his rate would be much higher than 130...

I train for 2-3 hours at 80-85%---or @150bpm. The important thing to remember is that the max hr (225-age) is just a theoretical maximum and the more well-trained you are, it can be higher--but it's all individual. I do not watch my speed on my bike, rather the readout is primarily %of Max HR and I can almost guess my speed based on the terrain and that number.

It also reminds me, no matter how bad I feel (like at mile 85) that I am actually still alive in spite of feeling like death

As anyone who wears a heart rate monitor will tell you--it (and blood pressure) is a great tool for determining your daily health (e.g. hydration; stress; hidden things in your diet that mess with you).

The real test of one's health is not their maximum, though it is their resting HR and how fast your HR comes down after exertion (the faster the better).

If your friends HR goes to 200 when he is watching tv and stays there--then he has a problem.

You should do exactly the opposite - instead of telling your (obviously out of shape, most likely overweight?) friend to avoid cardio he should do more, and the more intense it is the better. This will improve his endurance and make his heart more efficient at pumping blood so his resting HR should drop pretty quickly. Most overweight clients that come to me for advice have their resting HR's about 80-100/min .. After incorporating 2-3 HIIT sessions per week, their resting HR's typically drop from 10 to 20 beats/min in the following 3-6 months.

I remember back in the days when I did a lot of aerobic activity and my weight was ~60lbs lower, my morning resting HR averaged at about 40. Now it's about 75.

Yeah I must have checked mine a little while after training last night. Was 120 after run and a bit over 100 whilst lifting. Thanks for the responses guys appreciate it.

A resting HR of 100 does seem high. When I do cardio mine gets up to about 170. No idea about weight training as I have never measured my pulse while lifting.

When you say resting HR how was he rested? I lie down and relax, breath deep to take my resting HR. sitting down after a few sets isn't going to give an accurate picture of resting HR.

Like everyone said 130 really isn't high at his age. I push mine up to 180 when I do cardio and my technical max is 187

ditto!

I do lots of tracking of my heart rate and my students. To be honest all of it is not super accurate but it gives us a good idea what is going on.

Most of my 'elite' guys will have a true resting heart rate around 40.

During intense interval training we aim to get it around 160+ keep it there for a bit and then bring it down to around 100 for a bit.. then spike it back up 3-8 times/rounds. We will do this 1-2 times per week.

Your friend should measure his true resting hear rate. First thing in the morning. Before he even gets up. He should look to get that number lower and lower by doing a mix of HIIT and LSD training.

just looking at those numbers if accurate.. his resting is too high.. his working number is too low.

100% agree with this... I am wondering and am now under the impression that the interpretation of the resting heart rate is wrong by the op... I am thinking he thinks the resting heart rate is when rested after running or training... So of course it will be spiked for awhile... 100 just can't be right... 100 for a true resting heart rate is a person is really bad shape and then 130 would just not be right for one it is when doing training... there is some inaccuracy here somewhere..
