My First Strongman Contest

There I was at the Bergman farm for a day of training, just minding my own business, when the 3 brothers threw my gear and me in a truck and started driving. Little did I know that they had signed me up for my first strongman contest.

I was scared shitless. I have only been doing strongman training as an auxiliary to my PLing. I really have no idea what I am doing or how to do a lot of the events. I was so nervous that I nearly puked a few times. Thankfully, the whole Bergman crew was there also competing, except for Jason who just did an autograph session, and helped with the events.

Of course because I am a big fat PLer, I was in the heavyweight class too....

Here are my results.

Day 1:

400 lb Conan's Wheel - 332 feet (3 1/3 laps)
900 lb tire flip - Timed event for 3 flips, I only got 2
45,000 lb cement truck pull for 65' - I got it in 41.2 sec.

Except for the tire I had never done any of those events.

Day 2 (I know, I went back for more punishment):

275 lb beer keg medley: Chase down 5 kegs and bring them back & stand them up on a 5' platform. I did it in 1:28

Arm over arm 2 pick up truck pull 60' - I got it in 35 sec and tore off the skin on a few fingers

Atlas stone medley. 250, 275, 300, 325, 345 to 48" - I got the first 3 in 18 sec, but couldn't get the rest.

In my weight class I placed 12th out of 30 with Paul and Luke Bergman taking 1st & second respectfully. In the lightweights two members of the Bergman crew took the top 2 positions as well.

Today is tuesday, and I am still having a hard time walking - my whole body hurts. I have bruises all over.

The thing is, I had so much fun, that I am seriously thinking of switching over to SM from PLing. I've even registered for another event in August.

Awesome man!!!!

Sounds like you got bit buy the SM bug. We are all a little (read a lot) crazy. Usually takes me at least a week to feel normal again after a comp. Those were some great events too. Conan's wheel lets you know right away if you have any weak spots in your body.

Good to see that you have an awesome crew to work with as well. I can't wait to get back to competing I'm hopefull I can next month, but recovery is going slow.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Good shit man! Placing that well as a first time HW is pretty damn impressive. HW is by far the most competitive class.

Thanks guys. It was a lot of fun. And I thought PLers were nuts. SM make the PLers look like pillars of mental health.

thats awesome. ive been contemplating signing up for one myself, i just have nothing to train with. it looks like a lot of fun though.

Hell yeah B!

I wish there was a local crew for me to train with. SM looks like a lot of fun in a sick and twisted way.
