Just an FYI to some previous posts....
"techno" as a musical genre that promotes an "unhealthy lifestlye" seems to be the most ignorant, closed minded and downright stupid assed fucked up comment in a while.
actually, "techno" is a subset genre of "electronic music," which is basically any type of music that employs electronic musical instruments and technology (rather than traditional instruments like guitars, bass, drums, etc) to employ a beat. this includes house, trance, jungle, drum and bass, hip hop, 2-step, garage, hardcore, happy hardcore, and downtempo. (ever heard of guerillas? thats downtempo style of electronic music, does it promote an unhealthy lifestyle?)
Im so fucking sick and tired of stupid assed ignorant fucks out there who hear something on the radio or see something on tv and think they can make generalizations about what the music means and what it "promotes." If i went on that assumption, metal would promote violence and alcohol abuse, country music would promote incest, rap would promote being poor, the list goes on and on.
electronic music is different from traditional popular styles of music in the way the listener identifies with the sound. For someone who really "feels" an incubus song, most likely something in the lyrics is something that matches up with somethin personal in their lives. the same goes for almost every good song with lyrics in it worldwide.
electronic music uses BEATS and SOUNDS to get the listener to identify with it. Not by lyrics and life experience, but instead FEELING and MOOD. If im in a ecstatic, happy mood, i may listen to some funky house beat to get me going. If i am depressed, maybe dark/goa trance or deep house. If i feel agressive, jungle and drum and bass. Its all about the feeling, not an "unhealhty lifestyle"
as for tool, I have been a follower of maynard for some time. In my opinion I dont think his music is as anti-authority (although it IS...mostly to the established religions of the world, he does make note of the capitalist society and global imperialism) as he gets the listener in touch with the anger, rage, sadness, confusion, disdain and torment from the sexual abuse he faced as a child.
