Military bro's, I need some advice

natty said:
I don't know anything about you, but do you understand what I mean about what can you do? Why risk dying, shit Pat Tillman was killed by other Americans the military finally confirms now. If you were to die like this would you feel like you did something? The military has some many accidental deaths from war, training, PT you just don't hear about it. Going back to the Ranger SF thing I would try to talk to a few If I was you. You know how many people get injured badly in Ranger school. They say that school takes years off your life from getting no sleep for months. Here is one training challenge to work on to prepare, do as many pushups you can do straight then stay in the down part of the push up position for 30 minutes, you might do this for 1 hour staright in RIP. There will be alot harder shit then this once you get to RIP school (pre ranger).

I don't mean to be a dick or pick on you, but it really amazes me how people who have never done it love to comment on it and give advice.

There is absolutely nothing you can't do if you want it bad enough. That is what you learn when you go and do something hard. You learn how much power your mind really does have and that getting through a long ruck march carrying 75 to 100 pounds isn't as much a physical act as it is mental. Later on in life you find yourself in tough situations making difficult decisions and you can handle it because you can reach back there and that strength is there for you to draw on.

Believe me, if I can do it, anybody can do it.

I have been in the US Army for 5.5 years now and serve at Fort Bragg, NC. It has helped me through life, but the army has treated me shitty at the same time. Bush is fucking stupid...now we are going to be at war for another 5-10 years. Oh yeah more deployments and being away from the family and friends, and the F***ing GYM. Has giving me more responsibility and pride for my country. Would do it again if I had to choose. ...also anyone who dont' appreciate the soldiers of their country can go live somewhere else.

Your right about that when did you go through Bro? Myself Class 12-87...You have seen how pissed I was last night because I had my Military patches listed on my messages and what's his name Detroit whatever started talking trash & said for me not to post my Boy Scout patches!!! I told him many Soldiers had lost their lives wearing that patch including friends! I was just so mad that it took me awhile to calm down.

Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section, I'm just looking for advice wherever I can find it...
I've been battling with the idea of joining the military since I was 18, I'm now 23. I just can't seem to get over the need to help in some way if I can. To cut right to the chase, those of you who are in the military, do you feel like you have made a difference? I really dont like Bush or his agenda, but I feel that in order to have peace with myself, I need to know that I've helped other people in some way. The older I get, the more that I feel a duty to help those not as priviledged as us. I'm not some young yahoo who has the wrong idea of war and all of it's atrosities, I feel that I know as much as I can about it and I'm definatly not looking for glory or anything like that, I just want to help. So I guess my question to the military guys is, would you do it again if you had the chance? Thanks to everyone in advance, as this is something that has been ripping at me for a very long time and I'm about to make a final decision.

I would advise a little "strategic thinking" here. The military is a fine experience, but very serious.

Which branch? Why?
Officer or enlisted? Why?
Tour or career? Why?

WTF?! The Air Force isn't a branch of the military! They give us rides so we can do the fighting....

First of all, I want to say thank you to everyone who spoke their mind on this issue, good or bad. I do know how serious this decision is and I'm not taking it lightly. Oh, and Pdaddy, like I said in the opening post, I don't agree with Bush either but this decision isn't about that. I also know that this has nothing to do with steroids, I posted here b/c I knew that it would be read and responded to.
Thelion2005, to answer your questions:
1) Which branch and why? I am leaning towards the army. My father served in vietnam in the army and I do have an interest in the Rangers as a test for myself, more on that later. However, I would like to know more about the air force
2)Officer or enlisted, why? enlisted. I have about 2 years of college under my belt and if i did join I would finish after I got out which leads me to your next question...
3)Tour or Career? why. I am not looking to go career since I do have a very good job waiting on me when I finish college, whether that be in a couple of years or 10. I'm not looking for a job by any means by going into the military, just the experience of growing as a person and helping others, if I can.
The thing that strikes me most about this situation is that, as I said earlier, my father was in vietnam;firstas infrantry then as a door gunner on a helicopter. He saw the horrors of the war and was in two helicopter crashes, one which broke a few vertebre in his back which ended up sending home. He endured all of the hatred of soldiers when he returned to the states. And yet, after all of this, he still wants me to sign up. I'm not a person who needs too much guidence on anything, I just have an overwhelming feeling that I need to serve, both for myself and others. Like others have said before this post, I feel like the confidence and experience would be good for me. That being said, I still have a lot of reservations about joining, obviously. I'm not using this forum to make my decision, just for some input and knowledge about the whole situation and I again thank all of you for your input.

Dude, I'm going into the Army this November. I'm enlisting either as Ranger or 18x(SPecial Forces Recruit). I'm 28 years old, 4 years college,

Chefbone, if you have your degree why don't you go in as an officer? You can still be in the special forces and get a better lifestyle/career out of it. Either way it's great, just wondering why you wouldn't take advantage of the opportunity.

I like Pat Tillman, but he isnt the first athlete to go to war, what makes his sacrifice more noble is that todays athletes are more selfish

Agreed, after what happened to Pat, I get so angry when an athlete refuses to play because there isn't as much money as they want involved or stupid shit like that. This guy gave up millions and a cushy life, to accept maybe $20,000 or so a year in exchange for risking, and eventually giving, his life. That is a man that everyone should look up to.
