Military bro's, I need some advice

You say should be REQUIRED and you didn't even serve I know you had asthma, but I had issues to medical and legal and got in. It just doesn't sound right to me for somebody to say required and not put in one day. I was infantry at the 101st airborne division.

Yo Natty I hear you on that but the Army changes their rules all the time. When I went in it actually got me out of legal trouble and probation. Yet I watched a few people get kicked out for asthma in Basic. Then about 4 years in I watched the Army trying to get rid of people letting them out early and stuff & if you had any problems you it was much harder to get in. Now once again they will work wonders to get you in because they need the Boots on the ground! I even was contacted and I had to leave the Army after a open compound leg fracture during a night jump. 101st....Been to your area for Air Assault School. I was 82nd Airborne....

I was in the Army for 3 years with 1 year in Vietnam in an Armored Unit.I'm proud to have served and would do it again.No one thanked us for being in 'Nam but thank God people are appreciative for the soldiers coming home from Iraq.We need to show them all the support we can.

Dude, I'm going into the Army this November. I'm enlisting either as Ranger or 18x(SPecial Forces Recruit). I'm 28 years old, 4 years college, I have worked in two of the greatest restaurants in our country(look it up) and am dropping everything I know to defend ours. I see nothing wrong with you doing this. I commend you.

I no longer work so I can develop into a machine before I even step foot into boot camp. My friends think I'm nuts. My family thinks I'm nuts. Am I nuts? Fuck yeah I am. What can you do? There is just as many soldiers dying from accidents in the military as there are from Iraqi's killing them. But if you want to have no life, have low pay and take a chance of dying for Bush's secret agendas go ahead. Also even if your one hard ass mofo you still probably won't make it as a ranger or SF. I've known many of both and to have a chance it needs to be the passion of your life to even have a chance.

Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section, I'm just looking for advice wherever I can find it...
I've been battling with the idea of joining the military since I was 18, I'm now 23. I just can't seem to get over the need to help in some way if I can. To cut right to the chase, those of you who are in the military, do you feel like you have made a difference? I really dont like Bush or his agenda, but I feel that in order to have peace with myself, I need to know that I've helped other people in some way. The older I get, the more that I feel a duty to help those not as priviledged as us. I'm not some young yahoo who has the wrong idea of war and all of it's atrosities, I feel that I know as much as I can about it and I'm definatly not looking for glory or anything like that, I just want to help. So I guess my question to the military guys is, would you do it again if you had the chance? Thanks to everyone in advance, as this is something that has been ripping at me for a very long time and I'm about to make a final decision.

first of all i applaud you for even thinking of going in the military during these times. i myself just got out on disability from 12 years a Naval service. it is a huge decision and do not go at it alone. i recommend that the majority of young men need military training. i for one was headed nowhere and now i have a beautiful family and wonderful memories. yes i would do it all over again. it gave me the discipline i needed to succeed in life. my friends back home are still bums, hanging out on the street corner smokin weed doing absolutely nothing with their lives. if you are going to really go about joining please, i urge you to contact me and i will help you all the way through the process. the recruiters will lie to you. they are there to only sell the branch of service they represent and not a specific job. they will put you in a job that they want you to do, or they need to fill. pick something you can do after the military. a couple of friends of mine are parachute riggers in the navy. what type of job will they have when they get out? nothing.... so pick your job wisely. do not let them make you sign a paper that guarantee's nothing. they will try and tell you to go in without a specific job, be a deck-hand, and then you can see what job you want to do. DO NOT DO THAT!!!!!!!!! i beg you please. contact me if you are seriously concidering this. that goes for anyone. contact me ASAP and i will walk you through the process and not let you get screwed.

Damn come on Bro....I make more money in 2 months than I made a year in the Army easy but I was young and it was a stepping stone. Yes the first War over there we lost more soldiers to friendly fire and accidents but it happens! He sounds like he is getting his shit right towards going to RIP and if he can get through that then Ranger School but he had better be in the best physical and Mental shape ever!!! You better want it more than anything else in the World! Now SF is a whole different story my whole family is SF and it is the longest and hardest shit I've ever dreamed of so only the best get there and then graduate! I was going to give it my best shot and took the pre-physical to go to Q school and they test every damn thing to make sure you can handle the Hell your going to go through! Then like I said an open compound & staph infection from a night jump and VA Hospital stopped me. Keep training stay lean and run Forest run. Get a backpack and feel it with at least 75lbs and start walking as fast as possible for 10-15 miles a day without stopping.

You are so right about all that whenever I have anyone I know thinking about going in I go with them to the recruiters which they will don't like but you have to know what the hell your getting in your contract. They will lie their butts off to you and say "just sign here and we'll get you that airborne school, ranger school, SF slot later"! Yea right!!! If you want to make some money when you get out pick something you can use! You sound set on Rangers or SF so they will most likely try to get you to go Infantry. I myself went Commo and was able to get Airborne in my contract & got lucky that while at Ft. Benning they were looking for Commo Soldiers at Airborne School. When I went in you couldn't get SF in your contract but that has changed now also. Also when you go to the Mep station they also try to change your contract at times so watch them and if they do tell them you want except it and leave!!! They'll get you what you want if not then soon and they'll get in touch with you! Good luck.

been in for 7.5 years and am still active.Am a Gas Turbine Mechanic and volunteer Search and Rescue swimmer.My advice to you is make sure you know what your getting into.Ask questions from people in Branch you want to join in and rate specific questions,like what your day to day life will be in a certain field,advancment oppertunitys ect...Take the ASVAB and keep your scores then go to Army,Navy whatever branch your intrested in....I know Navy is www.staynavy.com you can put in your asvab scores and see jobs you qualify for...Then research the ones that sound good to you....My only regret is I didnt know enough before i joined.....I would have Never joined as a Gas Turbine mechanic if I knew what they really did day to day prior to joining.

I don't know anything about you, but do you understand what I mean about what can you do? Why risk dying, shit Pat Tillman was killed by other Americans the military finally confirms now. If you were to die like this would you feel like you did something? The military has some many accidental deaths from war, training, PT you just don't hear about it. Going back to the Ranger SF thing I would try to talk to a few If I was you. You know how many people get injured badly in Ranger school. They say that school takes years off your life from getting no sleep for months. Here is one training challenge to work on to prepare, do as many pushups you can do straight then stay in the down part of the push up position for 30 minutes, you might do this for 1 hour staright in RIP. There will be alot harder shit then this once you get to RIP school (pre ranger).
