Last night dinner =$1240.00 Tip = $3.00

hell yeah why throw money away for nothing and reinforce shitty service..

for just decent service i tip very well.. but if the service is shitty or nonexistent i do not buy into the you have to tip no matter what thing..

scattering random change about the table is a good way to say "hey idiot do your damn job better!"

I wouldn't speak to the manager because I wouldn't want to be responsible for getting someone fired, even if they deserve it.

Make sure you check your AMEX bill at the end of the month. On more than 1 occasion, I've had waiters/waitresses treat themselves to a bonus after I had left.

Yep, that's right. Myself, my boss and a client had dinner last night to go over some issues of acquiring our services.

Now the dinner wasn't that expensive, about $500, but it was that we had 3 bottles of very expensive wine, and then we sent another 4 bottles out to different tables. Sent one bottle to a table where this Italian dude was clearly so full of himself and on a first date to boot. He was doing nothing but talking about himself with his little square toe shoes. So I sent a bottle over there to the girl he was with. Man, you would have thought someone threw ice cold water in his face. He just shut up right away and finished the meal with a look of stun on his face.

Anyway, as the title says, I only left a $3 dollar tip. Can you believe that? And not by accident either. I don't know what the fuck the waitress was doing. When we sat down, we brought our drinks from the bar. We ordered and we did not even have table water until the meal came. Even then, it was the chef that brought our dishes. When we ordered more cocktails, I actually had to go back to the bar to get them as she wasn't coming around. All she did was take our order and then prior to us leaving bring the bill.

So, when I fill out the AmEx bill.. I put down $3.

Was I wrong?
That was mean.
They depend on tips.
Don't tip for the wine, but you have to tip for the food.

She did nothing. If there was a problem with the kitchen or anything on the operations side of the mestaurant, the manager should have come over and explained what was going on and done whatever possible to make it right. The fact that none of that happened shows that the server screwed up and that put it on her. If she did a great job, payed attention, and treated VIP customers that were dropping $1,200 on dinner on a corporate expense account, she could have made 20% ($240) for a couple hours of work. Possibly having them ask for her in the future if they went back for other dinners with other clients. AAP showed his generosity by buying other tables bottles of wine, and I don't doubt he would have shown her the same courtesy when he tipped her. She fucked up, costing her $200, and the restaurant a shitload in the future. I feel for her because I've had that job, but you deserve to be treated better if you pay that kind of money for a meal.

I agree that you should've talked to the manager. I also agree with the shitty tip. I've served for years, and the way I see it, you rent your section from the restaurant for the night. How you want to run your business is up to you. There is no excuse for lousy service if that's how you make your living. As for tipping in north america vs. europe...I believe "service" is included in the price of a meal over the ocean. Often, here, servers earn less than minimum wage due to tips. Even more reason not to be a crummy waitress!!

Good job. No matter where you go you expect good service. The waiter/waitress is the frontman. They represent the entire restaurant. The food, the chef, the surroundings, everything. If they fuckup, nobody gets a dime. I dont care if the food was astounding and the place was inpeccable. If the service sucks they get fucked.

The chef actually brought us our glasses of table water. After he delivered the meal. I had to go back up front to the bar to get cocktails for us while we were waiting, which should never have happen. Then when I wanted to send a bottle of wine somewhere, I had to GO BACK UP FRONT TO THE BAR. You would think with me spending money on other people they would at least accommodate me. All she did was take our order and then bring us the check and run my card through. You know that the manager probably oversaw the card transaction, at least at the end of the night when they cash out on tips they made from credit cards.
It was not like she was busy. I could see her standing up front doing a lot of talking with one table. They must have been her friends because she kept going over there and chatting excessively with them. I did put my phone number on the receipt in case the manager wants to call me about the three dollars.

She lost a nice pay day last night.

No matter how busy they are the service should still be excellent. Were not talking about a fast food joint here. Upper class restaurants shouldnt overcrowed there wait staff.
