Last night dinner =$1240.00 Tip = $3.00

If a waiter doesn't receive any tip at all or a very low tip, they actually had to pay money to serve you for the time you were there. This is because more than likely at the end of the night, they had to tip the bar on liquor sales, busboys, AND they got taxed on the tips off the food.

How does that sound? You (as the waiter) pay someone else money just to bust your ass to server food to a customer.

AAP

I hope you're joking.

Yes, you were wrong. Tip should have been at least $100, really $200 would be better, but many patrons don't tip the normal amount on alcohol. Some cheap bastards they are, but it is customary for some people not to.

You should have tipped a reasonable amount and then spoken to a manager. Usually at upscale places, service issues get fixed fast, especially if you're a regular.

Most people on this board don't spend $1200 on food all month, so of course the answers here are "You did the right thing AAP"...but you fucked up, sir.

You should go back and correct it. Unless this is all a joke, which I hope it is.

Then the waiter/waitress should've thought about that while they were NOT busting ass to serve AAP's table.

I thought tips weren't really required and were supposed to reflect your experience with the service provided?

I cannot stand if I have to walk up to the bar and get my own drinks!!

A good waiter/waitress will be accomodating without going overboard fake (fishing for a good tip).

I disagree. I would have left quite a bit more than $3, but that level of service is disrespectful. The manager should have been notified. At the same time, if a manager has a table dropping over a grand between three people he/ she should pay a table a visit to see how their meal is.

And enough with the income remarks in reference to the board members. It just shows that you can't buy class.

I agree. The waiter/waitress did a shitty job, therefore, got a shitty tip. I was just pointing out how that works.

When you eat upscale, you tip upscale, or else don't go there.

If the service sucks, talk to a manager. I eat out 21 meals a week. I have experienced my share of not-so-hot service. But a conversation with a manager has always fixed things, because managers of high end places know that they BETTER get shit right if you're paying real dollars.

The right answer here is to let the shitty service ride, and then take it up with management. At those types of places, one or two complaints usually means dismissal of bad service.

give her the tip. It will be a nice way for her to remember her old job.

Agreed.

While I think you should have spoken to the manager, I do not think she deserved much if anything in the way of a tip. If anything AAP, you should have asked to see the cook that brought you your meals and handed him a tip instead.

If AAP is supposed to tip waiters/waitresses that don't provide him with even a reasonable level of service, is he supposed to hand money to people on the street for no reason? If that's the case, the line starts behind me.
