Last night dinner =$1240.00 Tip = $3.00

True, but there are different leves of service that you come accustomed to in different areas. I go to some greasy spoon diner before golf to eat a plate of pig fat and some "B" grade eggs, I don't give a fuck what Flo says, as long as my eggs are right, food's warm, and coffee's full. If I go out with my girl and spend $250-$300, I don't want Flo, I want someone who will leave me the hell alone and be able to read my body language so they know if/ when I want something. That's what you pay for when you pay more. I don't want some little fucker coming by every 3 minutes to find some shit out. I'd go to Friday's if I wanted that. Every customer is gold, but who is taking care of them is usually how a place is remembered.

I can't say I disagree with that, but the server in question in this thread wouldn't of gotten a tip at any resteraunt I was eating at if she displayed that level of service.

Thats the key right there. A greasy spoon, or a high end place for people to throw away money, you expect a certain amount of service.

Oh and by the way, a tip is not required, only if you get good sevice should you tip.
I read it in Mrs. Manners, so there!

So the rest of us aren't paying "real" dollars when we go out to eat?

Any manager with half a brain is going to make sure that things are right if they want to keep business. Doesn't matter if it's a $1000 or a $15 bill, your patronage keeps them in business. It shouldn't matter to the waitress whether you are in a 5 star or a small resteraunt, she should still give a certain level of service or she shouldn't expect much in the way of a tip.

damn, bor, I can't even use expressions around you guys. Rough crowd.

You do know the managers of a high end place is usually a little more sophisticated than the manager of say, Ruby Tuesday?

Yep, that's right. Myself, my boss and a client had dinner last night to go over some issues of acquiring our services.

Now the dinner wasn't that expensive, about $500, but it was that we had 3 bottles of very expensive wine, and then we sent another 4 bottles out to different tables. Sent one bottle to a table where this Italian dude was clearly so full of himself and on a first date to boot. He was doing nothing but talking about himself with his little square toe shoes. So I sent a bottle over there to the girl he was with. Man, you would have thought someone threw ice cold water in his face. He just shut up right away and finished the meal with a look of stun on his face.

Anyway, as the title says, I only left a $3 dollar tip. Can you believe that? And not by accident either. I don't know what the fuck the waitress was doing. When we sat down, we brought our drinks from the bar. We ordered and we did not even have table water until the meal came. Even then, it was the chef that brought our dishes. When we ordered more cocktails, I actually had to go back to the bar to get them as she wasn't coming around. All she did was take our order and then prior to us leaving bring the bill.

So, when I fill out the AmEx bill.. I put down $3.

Was I wrong?

Dude, you were mad wrong!!! Alot of restaurants have food runners and drink runners. With shitty service you leave 10%, with good service maybe 20%. That's awful AAP, pain stakingly awful!

And when the server gives you 0 service, you leave 0%.

That's not wrong in fact it's great I hate it that people think you should tip when there is shitty service, also though I tip extra for really great service. I left a girl 11 cents on a 19.89 tab because we had to get all our drinks from the bar and waited for 30 min just to get our bill. I also left a note at the bottom saying "Next time try serving your customers" It wasn't a busy night she was just sitting over at another table smoking with her friends that came in instead of serving us.

Cheers,
Scotsman
