Knee pain when squatting

tk7209

New member
I stopped squatting a few years ago due to pains in my knees.
Now I'm doing the 5x5 Int I've started squatting again and am making good progress. Unofrtuantely the pain in my knees have returned. The best way I can describe it, is it feels like someone has hit my kneecaps with a baseball bat and they're badly bruised.

I'm always very mindful of my form when squatting. I always go below parallel, ass to the floor, with no bouncing.
My knees are really painful though, I can feel them when I walk up and down stairs, and if I have to bend down I grunt with pain.

The funy thing is though , when I start to squat they hurt but by the time I'm on my last set I can hardly feel them. They're always worst the day after I've squatted

I could go to the doctors but I'm sure he'll just to tell me to stop squatting. I keep thinking maybe it's just my knees adjusting to the weight but I think I'm kidding myself. I have very small joints and I think maybe I've just reached a point where the muscle is so much stronger than the
jointa and my knees can't handle the weight. I don't want to stop quatting but I don't want to be crippled by the time I'm 40 either , lol

Anyone experienced anything similar?

Are you stretching before working out?

You should do really do some body weight pause in the hole and then bar only warming up.

Also, when down atf...are your knees protruding out at the same angle as your toes? If your knees aren't extending out at the same degree as your toes you need to adjust your stance, they should be pointed out about 30 degrees but that varies person to person.

If you are going below parallel, the movement should really not be aggravating your knees, it's really all in your quad/hip area.

I do a bit of stretching, not much though. I don't do any body only warm ups, just the bar. I do about 12 reps before starting my first proper set.

My toes are extending out over my toes and my feet are about shoulder width apart maybe slightly less

It's OK if your knees are past your toes if it's in the same plane. If your knees are extending out at a different angle than your toes are pointing, you need to work on that. It should be like a straight line, not knee then toes slightly to the left or right (if you were looking from above).

my knees been bothering me too lately, not really pain but more like soreness.

everything checks out with my form (ATF), not even lifting that heavy really....I even video taped myself to make sure....I dont know...pisses me off really, seems like squatting I cannot ever completely get rid of some or another kind of knee nagging bothersome BS...

the reason you feel the pain when you start and not when you are at you last sets is your Synovial fluid has built up by your last set........you need to do rotations before you start to build up the Synovial fluid in your knees

Synovial fluid http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synovial_fluid

sometimes weak abs can bring about the over working of certain areas. or tight hamstrings. this will cause your pelvis to tilt and cause several problems...

I have a little problem with that too, a sharp pain as I do squats. Might help warming up? I also was told by a bodybuilding guy (duh) that you shouldn't stretch before working out because stretching muscles then working out could cause atrophy.

But, Idk the validity of that statement. Can anybody confirm this?
