There was a guy holding a cardboard sign on the corner by a stop light near the gas station asking for money. Tons of people were just driving by...So I pulled into the station as he was getting ready to leave and told him to come over here. I asked him what he needed money for, and he points over to this old piece of crap minivan w/4 lil kids that were filthy. he says, "one of my kids got severely burned, and there is a doctor and in Denver, CO that is going to take care of him free of charge, and they are also giving us a check for $5000 to help my family get back on thier feet, and all I have to do is make it to Denver, but I don't have enough money for gas to make it the rest of the way."
Now this guy has just traveled half way across the country, his family is filthy and you can tell they haven't bathed in many days. I walk over to his van, swipe my card through the gas pump, and tell him to fill it up. He's so happy he can't thank me enough.
I'm about to leave, and for some reason I go back...and give him $20 in cash (all that I had in my wallet) and tell him to go get something to eat. He was so gracious that he was going to be able to feed his children.
You pass people on the street all the time not knowing their story, and assuming they're beggers. It's amazing what you hear if you take the time to really find out, and it feels wonderful to help.
