It's the holidays. How much fat will you gain?

It's the holidays and we are all going to be busy with related activities like parties, family get-togethers, shopping, and of course eating. Your diet will absolutely be challenged, and you are going to find it far more difficult to make time for your training, so right now is the time to proactively plan for dealing with this.

Will you keep your fitness plan on track and avoid fat gain? If so, what's your plan? Or will you just give up and get a little out of shape and a little fat?

Interestingly, I believe I will be on track to lose about 10 lb by new yrs. One of the advantages of living fairly far away from family is the ability to avoid the festive feeding frenzies.

I also tend to pass through phases when I am competing, and for some reason my life also seems to crash right after I compete so I get to do the comp rebound plus the non-training & bummer-driven eating all at once. Then I come out of it & get back on track.

Its time to get on track :)

My turkey day was last month, but I will be in the states for your Thanksgiving, lucky for me, my boyfriend's brother (who we are going to be visiting) works at a school and has access to the gym, so I have to reason to miss my work outs, and I'll have my 1 cheat meal (the dinner on thursday night) and be on my diet for the rest of my time there. His wife competes, so she will be dieting also, and they totally understand this lifestyle.

I'll schedule my weekly cheat meal on Thanksgiving and Christmas, otherwise I'm hoping to stay completely on track with my program.

I actually find it easier to diet through the holiday's... Yes I'm odd. I guess I just watch how everyone else has gotten bigger over the past year, stuffing their faces with food, and it's a turn off for me. Then they pass out on the couch or complain about how full they are and that they are going to explode. I hate that feeling! I would rather take a bite here and there, but I will definitely keep working out. I already have all my meals packed and weighed for the next 3 days. I have my one cheat meal Thursday's dinner. That's it!

I read in Weight Watchers magazine that the average person only gains 1 pound because of Thanksgiving... I'm assuming that doesn't include all the water weight gained.

On my turkey day I had 6 oz of turkey and 2 cups green beans. I lost 2 lbs that week and I was the only one in my family that didn't complain about how bloated they were after dinner. I will be having cheat meals for sure on the 25 & 26 two days of eating what ever I want probably pack on 2-4 lbs then. Oh and NYE I will be drinking so there is probably another 2 so all total no more then 6 I hope. LOL

I am just a fat magnet right now, Turkey Day or not. ;)

One nice thing is that I can just eat, without stressing. I am going to gain no matter what. ;) lol

What's truly amazing, the holidays and holiday related weight gain stopped being an issue when I developed gluten intolerance ... that's good or bad depending on how you look at it. My big downfall was always baked goods.

It's the day to day stuff that screws me up.

... yet another reason your avi holds true for me ...

Have a good one DG!

I am worried this is my first holiday, with my new change of lifestyle and dieting and exercising...I have been thinking about, just eating small portions, but not depriving myself. I have been working out extra hard this week, and I will actually hit the gym the morning of Thanksgiving, while the Turkey is cooking...So I don't feel so guilty, when I eat that night...

Last year I skimped on Turkey Day because it was before I found EF and only henpecked at the food, and didn't eat much of anything. This year , I will make up for it. If I go overboard, oh well, you'll see it in my scale weight as my body retains the water which I will then shed within the 3 days following Thanksgiving.

I will do my best to ...

- have only one piece of Pumpkin Pie and not the entire thing
- have only 2 scoops of pappa's secret stuffing and not 6
- drink only 1 bottle of wine, not 3
- Up my water intake, more than the 2 gallons I consume daily
- take my Glucorell & Sesamax although the only thing that will really help me is self-control

... I'll start with those

Happy Holidays everyone & Happy Thanksgiving to those that already celebrated last month . I was eating right along with you then too... :rose:

My fiance will be with me and his goals are mine also, so that will make it a little easier NOT to "graze".

I'm with Bunny, even if I DO screw up a bit, it'll be gone within 3 days, so I'm not going to stress too much about it. But I'll definitely try to keep to the whole foods and turkey - a sweet here and maybe there. My Sesamax will be on hand as will the water.

I know we'll have the traditional turkey, mashed potatoes, etc. I'm also taking shrimp coctail (that I still have to prepare) w/ homemade coctail sauce and a broccoli/cauliflower salad. I'll have plenty of healthy choices. I hope I can resist the fudge urge. My aunt makes homemade fudge, choc, pb, white choc and stuffs tins full! Crap....forgot about that! Well, better get the mind in deny mode now!

Have a safe holiday everyone! :RADAR  :wavey:

Unfortunately (as far as the meal goes), on Turkey Day my grandmother is cooking...so I have no real choice in the menu. However, I will do my best to eat as healthy as possible, and not overdo it on the sweets. :p We might have another immediate family day...but we all eat healthy, so thats not a prob.

Lots of Glucorell and Digestive Enzymes! ;) Not to mention, I am working out LOTS this week to hopefully make-up for any "sinning" in what I might eat. :verygood:

I don't usually gain a lot of fat - I do bloat pretty bad and hold a lot of water for a few days my actual weight will vary about 8-10 lbs up and down but we're really only talking about three days over the course of 61 days that you'd be woofing down a fair amount of food.

You just have to make sure the sweets are out of the house when the celebrating is done.

I'll probably gain a few. I eat Candied Yams and my special Truffle two times a year (Christmas and Thanksgiving). I don't really see the point in denying myself to the extent that I don't eat my favorite holiday foods.

But then again - this has been a shitty month and my goal was blown long ago, so I figured a dish or two os sweetness won't hurt me that much. :p

I will probably gain 2-3lbs with the holiday parties and actual meals. I think most of it will be bloat. I plan to do more cardio in Dec to compensate for the additional drinking and eating, so we'll see how that works out. But any day that I am on my own not involving social interactions with friends will be a totally clean one and I will not indulge in all the snacks and desserts that will be brought into my workplace.

I don't think I will gain any. I'm sure I will get bloated from the carbs (I'm going low carb on Sunday). This my first Holiday Season as a member of EF, I have no desire to eat the way I use to around this time of year. This Thanksgiving, I made small batches of everything to avoid overeating and at the last minute decided to not bake any pies.

Jan. 1st, 2006 will be the first time ever, that I make goals to improve (i.e., more muscle) &/or maintain the work I did this year and not make goals to repair myself from the damaged I caused by overeating, overdrinking, and overstressing. Those first set of progress pics I took in my log are a reminder of where I don't want to be again.

To all the ladies ( :bigkiss: ) that remember me from the past: Progress Pics and a bump up of the old dusty log will be arriving on Dec. 1. I miss this place. Time to get it together. Bikinis come out in March/April and I want to be tight and lean by then and not make an excuse like "I will wait until they are on sale in June" (when I really mean, "oh, I have another 3 months") when the leftovers are on the racks (and I'm still not ready, lol). I've always wanted to wear a crochet bikini, next Spr./Summer . . . I will, oh, I will.

:rose: :rose:

Well, I tried, but I just couldn't eat all I wanted to!!! Started with turkey breast, mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing on my plate.

A while later, I ate a frosted sugar cookie.....a while later a piece of homemade fudge....a while later an oatmeal/PB/choc. chip cookie. About an hour later I had a couple sweet pickles and a couple potato chips and a few pieces of shrimp coctail. That's it. I was SOOOOO stuffed!

2 Vodka & Diet Squirt coctails and 3 glasses of wine throughout the day.

Woke up this morning to absolutely NO BLOAT. Didn't weigh in, but I'm sure it's not more than a pound. First thing I did when I got home last night was popped 2 Sesamax.

I brought home a piece of apple caramel pie and put it in the freezer for a cheat day.

So....how did you do?!?!?!?!

I ate a ton of food yesterday--and I do mean a ton. :) Woke up this morning and only gained a pound and a half. I fully expected a good three pound gain. Thanks Glucorell! I popped 5 of those babies 15 minutes prior to Thanksgiving dinner so they must have helped. This morning I hit the cardio machines first thing so I'm right back on it.

Are you talking about 1 lb of fat? or 1 lb according to the scale?

I was ~ 173 Thursday Morning and I'm 184.2 lbs as of 4:02 pm Friday...scale weight.

I'm sure I took enough Glucorell and Sesamax to kill a small horse ...

I musta won something ...

:D

One pound scale weight. Is that better or worse?
Oh honey if I was concerned with my scale weight I'd hurl myself off a building right about now...

I apologize for any confusion ... I was being a smart ass while trying to make you feel that one pound is NOTHING, as I am make fun of my ~ 12 lb gain (on the scale).

IMO you have NOTHING to worry about. Keep the diet tight, training steady, allow yourself your weekly cheat meal and you're well on your way to achieving your goal ... :D

:D

Wow, all those liquids and salty food really waterlogged you, haina. In my case, my caffiene consumption seems to balance my salt intake hence I wizz like a racehorse pretty much constantly.

I actually lost 2lbs! Here I am in a building phase, and I ate a bunch of food (some bad!) and I actually lost 2lbs. I think it was all the last minute running around, and stress of all the family getting together.

eek a man. Get out!@!$%

Really though, ladies this is one of those smart, gracious guys we like in our forum. :) He's been gone for ages, but I seem to have convinced him to get back in here.

I have had the same goal last 5 years, not gain and take week off before holidays, i am just off my break...Hope this year will begood!

Less than 5 lbs.
I'm not doing the cooking this year so I don't have to worry about tons of cakes, cookies and pies for leftovers AND I've volunteered my services for left over veggies and turkey as long as they aren't smothered in some grotesque fat-laden foreign substance.

They know my eating habits so when they are sick of turkey and send it to me..........I'll break out the extra box of baggies to begin the sort & freeze routine.

Hey RR, just read this from WebMD
Hope it helps...
I know WE ALL KNOW IT...
It's time to stock up on holiday goodies again. No matter that you and many of your friends and relatives are counting calories this year. It would be a shame to be caught with an empty pantry if guests dropped by. What could it hurt to lay in a supply of fancy chocolates, just to be on the safe side?

It's when you look at your chocolate-smudged fingers and see four empty candy wrappers that it hits you. You're on a binge.

The next day, you join your co-workers in the break room and indulge in the frosted cookies and other holiday goodies you'd been avoiding all week. That night, you go to a party where you end up eating like there's no tomorrow.

What happened? Your diet had been going so well -- at least since the last binge.

Why Do Special Occasions Make Us Vulnerable?

What is it about special occasions -- holidays, weddings, birthdays, vacations -- that invites eating well past the point of being full? Three experts talked to WebMD about the problem and gave some advice on how to bounce back -- and how to prevent the next binge.

Special occasions trigger binges for three reasons, says David L. Katz, MD, MPH, FACPM, author of The Way to Eat.

* First, they provide a social license to binge because everyone's doing it. "Indulgence loves company," Katz says.
* Second, they provide opportunity: "You're surrounded by foods like chocolate candy, and exposure begets indulgence."
* And third, they provide a festive feeling: "You think because it's not something you usually do that it's OK. You can compensate tomorrow."

Special occasions are part of a complex web of hobgoblins that ensnare us in spite of our good intentions. Stress, loneliness, boredom, and feelings of deprivation all contribute.

Deprivation is one of the big ones for dieters, says Dee Sandquist, MS, RD, CD, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.

"Dieting for some people means skipping meals and getting overly hungry," she says. "That could cause a binge. You'll crave the foods you're leaving out."

Can You Stop Mid-Binge?

One way to turn off a binge is to get away from the stimulus, says Christian Crandall, PhD, professor of social psychology at the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

"Drop the candy in a Dumpster," Crandall says. "If you're home alone, call someone to come over who will interfere with your ability to binge, or leave home and go out in public. The car doesn't count."

Sandquist, manager of the Nutrition and Diabetes Center at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Wash., says while it's not easy to stop mid-binge, it is possible. First, ask yourself if the binge is really worth it.

Then notice what triggered the binge. "For example, if I get overtired I tend to eat too much," says Sandquist. "We need to learn how to express ourselves and find out what we need instead of food for comfort."

Finally, write down your strategies for weight control -- the ones that sustained you before the binge. And be gentle with yourself. "If you stop with five cookies instead of 10, you've made progress." Sandquist says. "It's a process."

She recommends not trying to ignore cravings, which can lead to feelings of deprivation. Instead, manage them by enjoying bite-sized indulgences.

For example, you can satisfy a chocolate craving with a small piece of dark chocolate: "Make it an event. Give it 10 or 15 minutes." Alternately, she suggests, "try low-fat chocolate milk, or mix unsweetened cocoa, nonfat milk, and artificial sweetener."
