injured tendon

thanks for all the responses guys. I was considering prolo therapy but the closest doc is just too far away. I havent been using any anti-inflam or ice, or heat for that matter. I dont train tris at all, but they get some work on chest and shoulder days. Should I still train the one good tri, or just wait?

I wanted to start my second cycle soon, but feel that I should wait until my tri is 100%, otherwise I might cause further injury, wasting both my gear and destroying endo test production for nothing.

What do you say to the cycle? yay or nay?

karma for everyone

RICE ice and compression also reduce blood flow and in turn reduce the ability of an area to heal. Use heat and motion to promote blood flow to get needed nutrients to the site to promote healing.

It was after reading one of your posts that I researched prolo and also realized that doctors are looking to alleviate the symptons as apposed to enhance healing, etc. And I agree with everything you posted however I'm not sure about the ice. I read that initially the inflamation can actually prevent the good stuff (blood, nutrients) from getting in and that initially a little ice is a good thing. Its funny 'cause I tried researching inflamation so that I could understand what the body is trying to do. Of course everything the body does is for a reason yet I asked two doctors about this and they simply said, "We want to reduce the inflamation..." but they never truly said why. Can you elaborate or provide some links? Also, when I hurt my arm it was useless for 2 weeks and then someone said to ice it. I swear that it really started feeling better after I started iceing it. I really want to understand this.

Yossarian2000, I would wait to cycle until healed and pain free without meds. The gear will allow muscles to get stronger at a much faster rate than the tendons/ligaments can adjust and thicken and put further stresses on them and greatly increase the chances of further injury and wasting your cycle.

The body does have a way of overcompensating at times and its not always good (allergic reaction for one) but in the case of tendons/ligaments, they are poorly nurished and have little blood flow, Inflamation is in part caused by the healing reaction taking place and can be very painfull. I would say if the initial inflamation hinders too severly ones ability to perform a required function like work then use ice sparingly right after injury but aside from that let it be, use heat and avoid anti-inflamatories. Yes, reducing inflamation will make things feel better, but feeling good isnt a sign of being healed, after all I could dope you up with morphene and cut your leg off, just cause you dont feel pain does NOT mean everything is allright.

As for reading material, Dr Huaser has a great book, other than that, basic anatomy books cover all the aspects of healing and the process that occurs, cells that untilized and the reactions that take place. These things most of us learned in high school or earlier however the majority of the medical community seems to forget these things once they move on to medical school where patient comfort seems to be the most important thing.

Following the averages doctors advice is one of the biggest reasons so many althetes suffer long term dibilitating injuries. They may get em feeling good short term, but its done at the expense of long term wellness.

Yossarian,
Zyg is accurate w/ his comments.
The reason docs want to decrease the inflammation is, in part, force of habit. It does make the pain better therefore the patient's happy, etc. And we've come to expect that, docs and patients alike.
We tend to forget that which we learn very early on (2nd year medical school in pathology!); inflammation is the normal pathway to healing, whether the injury is a bony fracture, a ligament tear, a surgical incision, or a little paper cut on the finger. The cardinal signs are: redness (increased blood flow), pain (inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins, bradykinins, etc), edema or swelling (mediators and blood flow again), and heat (all of the above).
When we understand this normal physiology, then we can see some of what we're doing wrong. Af course, out of control inflammation is a bad thing (eg, rheumatoid arthritis, and other "autoimmune disorders).
Prolotherapy causes a targeted inflammatory response at the tendon/ligament interface w/ the bone, where there is an intrinsically poor blood supply (but abundant nerve endings!). It also causes the release of growth factors. Result? New collagen growth and strengthening of the structures.
If you can't get prolo, rest it.

Listen to Zyg dude....doctors are out to reduce symptoms and not alleviate the root problems...with pec tendonitis i found the best solution was one week off of training upper body completely and constant hot/cold alternating compresses....then begin training light and continue the compresses post-workout for as long as possible....
