How big are your hands?

If I were you, i'd get a Sig Sauer P229 or a Springfield 1911 compact.

The Sig P229 is comfortable as hell.
The beau has one but it jams all the time but like anything you can own a dud.

I like Glocks myself - 29, 19, 26, 27 - choose your size and calibur.

my girl gave me the gun early for xmas, i got a glock 21 .45cal. she also got me the 10round clip and houge(sp?) grips too! She even bought me 50rounds! awesome

1911 .45 would be your best bet. Enough gun to get it done. Use hollow points to keep damage to the bullet from traveling forever, and it will cause some serious damage to the intruder.

Remeber guns don't kill people, people kill people.

Congrats on the new home defense weapon.

Perfect, All you need for home defence is a good brand of ammo. Some quality JHP and you're all set.

Someone already beat me to the Get a Shotgun and the .45 penatrating walls rebuttal..

When you are 1/2 asleep and surprised or its dark, believe me you don't have time
to take aim with a pistol as well as you would like.. Nothing like at the range..

So, the Shotgun would be many peoples first recommendation for HOME protection.

Point and shoot with a wide range of hit potential so its forgiving on bad aim.

Loud as hell so it you do miss the dude is gonna haul ass regardless of PCP

Lower penetrating potential so you are less likely to kill the next door neighbors.

Very simple and reliable operation especially with a good pump gun like a Remington 870 you can get anywhere for $400 or even a Mossburg for less $

Use 00 buck 3" magnum shells.
I've read debate on the bird vs buck and read police reports of people hit with less than 00 at more than 20 ft that kept coming because the birdshot did not penetrate deep thru jackets etc.. Not to say it didn't hurt
but the stopping power of Magnum buck is awesome yet it won't go deep into walls.. It will tear them up but who cares about that at the time

Also important due to it being dark and you wanting to see where the end of the gun is pointing.. Get some stick on Magnetic Fiber Optic Glow sights:

you are set

If you want a good low cost reliable carry weapon, the 1911 .45 auto is cheap but a bit big, or any of the good 9mm autos from glock or barretta, but get ready to pay high $ for the latter..

With a handgun as self defense, you can reduce or eliminate over-penetration with the right type of round. In close quarters I use Federal Hydra Shoks JHP 165 gr.. I use the lighter bullets, 165gr. or 185gr because they have a much greater performance than the 230gr. in 4in. or sub-4in. barrels. <I have a Kimber Pro CDP 4 in barrel.>
If you are worried missing and possibly having a round go through the wall another option is a "Frangible" round. They are designed to break up upon impact with an object harder than they are hard.
As a best bet, find a local range that teaches personal defense and learn how to use your handgun in as many situations as possible and practice!
I know "hi-cap" magazines are all the rage these days but with proper training all you will need is one well-placed shot to put down someone that is posing a lethal threat to you.
Shotguns are excellent too, however not nearly as convenient or handy as a handgun in the right hands due to, if nothing else, the sheer bulk of the weapon.
Most importantly practice, practice, practice. Learn your local laws as well regarding the use of a firearm for self defense.

Most of all have fun shooting and hope that you never get put in that situation.

hmm... home defense only? Im with the shotgun crowd. Here is the thing - NOTHING, I mean NOTHING will make an intruder piss his/her pants and think twice about continuing the intrusion like the sound of a pump action shotgun "racking". Shotguns are FANTASTIC at close range (you don't have to be as accurate so when you are scared/jacked up and shaking etc you have more of a chance of a hit), have less penetrating power (with the right load), have an AMAZING "pucker factor" (see above), and at close range REALLY can do some damage.

Among the negatives to consider - a pump gun needs to be pumped each round (and semi-auto shotguns don't have quite the "pucker factor"), bringing the shotgun "to target" can take slightly longer than a pistol can (they are longer/bigger) and holding on target can be slightly more difficult (although you don't have to be as accurate with a shotgun).

Lots of things to think about. Here is my advice - take a few gun NRA approved gun safety courses and learn about the real considerations, then ask/learn about your local laws etc. Factor all of these things in with what the members are suggesting here THEN make your decision. No need to buy BEFORE you take some classes - you can always take more with your specific gun.
