The .45 does not have a lot of penetrating power. It is a large, slow and accurate load though I would prefer it over the 9mm.

Get a .40 or .357 magnum if you must have a handgun.

For home defense, I recommend a .357 magnum with a 6" barrel.

Better yet....12 guage. Easier to hit your target and less expensive.

It's for home defense only ? Then get a Glock since they're easy to use. If your hands can handle a large grip, then get a Glock 20 (10mm). You can have access to a wide variety of loads between 135gr and 220gr. The G21 in .45 would be another option
