I need some career and college advice please...

I am soon going to be semi on my own and starting college.

By semi on my own I mean my parents will help somewhat with bills and college costs.

I am rather confused about what the best course of action for me at this point in time is.

I could go to a community college and take some type of programming and/or web design class hoping they'd teach me something that I don't already know.

My career will be in computers, not hardware but software...including options like programming (anything, Java, C, Perl or what not) web design, networking...etc...

I'd like some advice on what my best course of action is please, particularly from Johnny O, Matt, Warik, Happy Scrappy and anyone else in this type of tech field.

MY MAJOR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH COMPUTERS BUT I CAN TELL YOU THAT A JUC.O. OR COMM.CO. ISNT ALL THAT GREAT. YOU NEED TO GO TO A 4 YEAR SCHOOL WITH REPUTABLE PROGRAMS IN YOUR FEILD.

MY SCHOOL IS VERY GOOD IN ANYTHING KINESIOLOGY (IE...EXER. PHYS.), BUSINESS, EDUCATION, AND NURSING. MY MAJOR HAS TO DO WITH BUSINESS. THATS WHY I GO TO THE SCHOOL I GO TO.

I SUGGEST GOING TO (OR CALLING) THE SCHOOLS IN THE AREA AND GETTING INFO ON EACH OF THE SCHOOLS AND THEIR PROGRAMS. SOME SCHOOLS MAY NOT EVEN OFFER THE PRE REQ'S YOU NEED FOR YOUR MAJOR. YOU NEED TO FIND OUT IF YOUR CREDITS WILL TRANSFER IF YOU EVER NEED TO TRANSFER. IF YOU HAVE 60 HOURS AND ONLY 30 TRANSFER, YOU HAVE WASTED A YEAR.

You don't have to rush into selecting a major; you can take your liberals your first year and then take a few courses here and there in the fields you think you may have an interest in majoring in.

i agree with kayne...a juco or a community college won't challenge you. you'll be lumped in classes with a bunch of people who, to be blunt, are not too bright. (there are exceptions, of course, but the classes will be "taught down" to the lowest common denominator)

it sounds like you know what you want to do after graduating...i have a b.s. in math and a b.a. in history and now i'm a software developer...as you know, there are many people in this industry who reached this profession through circuitous routes. it's certainly possible for you to be a great success without a diploma from a fancy college behind you....but my own opinion (some, like matt, would disagree) is that a degree from a respected university will open doors for you that would otherwise be closed.

i don't know what the future holds, but if the tech job market gets tighter, then a degree will be a bigger advantage. i think a lot of these people who have done well in this industry without degrees got into the field because there was a dearth of candidates to fill positions. these people could be squeezed out in the coming years if things tighten up more.
