for the record I personally am against people coming into this country not knowing one bit of fucking english. But if you know english and feel like speaking something els,e then fine, but hello, you should at least be able to communicate with the majority of people.

I just expect to be able to walk into a store, or call one on the phone, and conduct my business in the language of the country that I'm in. When in Rome dress like the Romans. I work for a Japanese computer/electronics company and there are at least two people in my dept whose English is so bad we pretty much have to use sign language to communicate. If I hit up a store in Chinatown that's a different story.

I speak a couple of languages other than english but I also agree that if you live in america, you should try to integrate yourself by speaking the national language (english) in public and save the other languages for "home use" as I do. I always have to speak korean or hawaiian to people who have a harder time understanding english (my parents sometimes), but i'd never speak it in public because i'm embarassed to.

English is hardly the native language of the continent of North America asI'm sure native Indians would testify - English is merely the language of the proletariat. Most Yanks here speak English , the Germans being the incredibly accomdating folks they are just learn and speak it back without question.
Given a choice between English and French as a mother tongue , I would choose French in a heartbeat - infinitely more expressive language and a deep rich culture which prides itself on quality not quantity.
I hated languages in school but have learned their value as I got older - German , Spanish , Italian and French - and am considering doing a little bit of Swedish now since I have got to meet a few Swedish chics.
Language is part of a people's charm and I like to be charmed.........
