I dropped my blood sugar 68 points in 2 hrs

;) I just did my first carb up on my / Mr. X TKD program. Here is how it went.

5:30 pm in Ketosis, blood sugar 77

7:00 pm carb up with 24 grams glucose HI GI, 24 grams fructose from grapefruit juice LOW GI carbs with 2 r-ala and creatine.

7:30 Blood sugar 139, took 2 r-ala started work out.

Back, shoulders, legs,

9:00 Finish workout blood sugar 71

I used a Precision Xtra blood glucose / ketone meter. Sorry do not have any ketone blood tests strips otherwise I would have posted those readings.

In 2 hours I swung my blood sugar 68 points. I think I am now back in Ketosis.

Guess, I am just excited that the carb up went so well and I was able to drop my blood sugar back down so fast. The carbup itself was interesting. Imagine a CKD carbup with a return back to Ketosis in 2 hours. Thats how my body felt. First a little light headed with almost a headache, then massive energy, then the transistion back down to low blood sugar. What a rush. I will use a keto-stick at 1:00am to see if I am positive for Ketones.

:D Yea Baby I am back in Ketosis. Its 1:00 am and I just made myself pee for a keto check. Purple baby, I pulled off my first TKD carbup and got back into Ketosis in less than 5 hours. I am very pleased it worked.

FYI, I drank a ton of water and have not peed since I started working out. I am almost positive that the Ketones in my urine are new and not residual as I cleared my bladder after the carbup started. With the carbup I took 10 grams of creatine and a total of 400mg r-ala. I put on 2 pounds of water weight.

how many carbs do you think you can have during the ketosis week?

I had 50grams of dextrose and got my ketones to show up again in 2hours :)

I am doing 50 grams pre workout per day Monday - Friday with Saturday and Sunday off. I may increase my pre-workout carb up as my blood glucose post workout is getting progressivly lower. After my workout yesterday, my blood sugar was down from 135 to 45 in less than 2 hours. That was a huge 90 point drop and maybe an indicator I need more pre-workout carbs.

How are you measuring your keatones? Urine or Blood? Which program do you find more challenging TKD or CKD?

TKD is tougher for me. The blood sugar spike and drop can be a little much for me.

I just use urine to measure but i'm doing CkD. I 'm trying to run on it...which is nuts I know...but have those extra carbs might be the trick to get through my last 2 days of ketosis.

I'm using Jarrow Sustained released ALA 300mg. So far taking 600mg before the carbs has worked.

Seems like you would get better results from a non Keto diet since you are already carbing up the last 2 days. I do not know about you but for me the carbup and carb down is hell. When I am comming off the carbs from my workout I feel my worst in that part of the day. I find that no carbs all day and working out is easier than the hell of carbing up and carbing down. The blood sugar swings are bruital.

Besides at 50 grams of Dextrose you are only giving your body 200 calories or energy to burn before it has to turn its ketone production back on for energy. How many calories are you burning in a typical run? I will bet it is over 200. If that is the case how do you feel toward the end of your run when your body has to change over from sugar to fats for energy?

I think perhaps you should try TKD or due CKD properly under the assuption you are trying to loose fat. Otherwise due a caloric deficit program with carbs.

Lastly, the ketones in your blatter may still be present from before your carbup carring over to after your carbup giving you a false positive.

Let me know what you think.

If I knew I could consistently go back into ketosis after TKD, than I think my running would really benefit.

Right now i'm doing CKD and carbing up only on the weekends. My run on monday is freaking awesome compared to friday (last day of ketosis). but it's not like I'm dying on the run, and I think the fat loss might be greater on CKD..but i'm not positive.

also, I'm having good results with ALA. I got into ketosis 18 hours into my week instead of 3 days...so we'll see :)

Zagerus,
How often do you check your blood sugar? Over the past year I have been trying to design programs for athletes using blood sugar measurements to shape training and diet. A 68 point swing doesn't seem that extreme considering that it was post-workout. Have you tried without the ALA?

Last week I checked my blood sugar an average of 5 times a day.
I have been trying to monitor my blood glucose against food intake and exercise to optimize my program. I am also planning to due a carbup without R-ALA to see if their is really any difference. The jury is still out with me if this stuff really works or not. I can tell you that in the past regular ALA did not due anything to lower my blood glucose. Vanadyl was a much more effective glucose disposal agent and lowered my blood glucose an average of 10 points over 4 controlled testing sequences. Please tell me more about your work.
