How strong Do I have to be for D-1 Football

4.7 is slow as hell for high school let alone real athletes like the ones who play D1. you will never get to a decent speed. coming from a former strength and speed coach, either youre fast or youre not. you dont magically become fast. you cant teach speed or height. reality.

haha i never got burnt, jus because someone has good track speed doesnt mean they are good. What if i got big enough to be an outside backer? D1? My awareness and skill could make up for my speed

you have no clue how fast and elusive these giant men are dude. its no joke. ive timed guys 6'9" 290 at 4.9. thats no bullshit. and ive seen electronic finger pad 4.3 runs. you dont realize it till they are on you. you might be aware of the game and have never got beat in one on one coverage but the level of competition is what matters. 4.7 is very average and very slow. you dont get bigger and get faster. its all about proprioception, knee drive, elasticity of the hip muscles and tendons, weight of the calf. running fast is a gift. you dont just work hard and run faster. i never discourage people from trying so go for it. just be prepared for reality. it could be embarrassing so be real quiet and humble, dont talk shit at all. the egos you will encounter could be ridiculous.

yea i understand, but arent there any 4.6 safeties out there?

safeties and corners are the fastest players on the field. 4.5 to 4.6 linebackers are very large. i doubt youll be running that fast at 240. the 5'10" 240 guys are just naturally built to move that fast. if you dont have it, you dont have it. sucks but true.

I think your height would be a serious detriment even if you got big enough to be a linebacker. Not to bust balls at all. I totally think you should go for it if you want to.
Running while pulling weights seems like the only thing that might improve your speed at all. I dont even know if it would though. I would say with ball busting work you might be able to get a second shaved off. But no more.
There is ofcourse that thing called game speed that guys have. But unless you have some serious video footage of yourself displaying that game speed, the coaches will likely be less than excited to let you prove yourself.

Thanks tblock!

needmass, gl with walking on. Ill def be lowering my 40 time then. Just sucks to focus on speed when i really want to get stronger, and it seems like its hard to do both at the same time. Like cutting/bulking

I feel the same way. I'm 17 and started lifting a few months ago, but am also prepping for army rangers at 18. So I have to do the running and endurance stuff while trying to get strong. So fat I got a 5:14 mile though, but every time I run I feel ike I'm losing strength.

That would be amazing. He would be the fastest football player of all time (NFL players included) :p:p:p

Here is a real life example of how hard it is. Here is a profile of a kid on my college team. He squats the same as Glad and propably benchesh the same now (this was high school profile). He is 185 now and runs a sub 4.4 40 and probably one of the top 3 in the 40 on the team.

This is his 3rd year on the team and he comes in occasionally on special teams. Kid has excellent football skills, good cover and good tackler. His brother was starting safety on the same team.

Timtim said you can't coach speed and you can't coach height either. If you really want to play college ball, you need to look at JC.
