How strong Do I have to be for D-1 Football

I know i understand, I am a good player. Actually i always played corner but now im almost 200lbs i think id be more of a safety.

Im just talking about strength alone, like what are good numbers for D1. Assuming i had speed, vert, skill

Your numbers are fine. If when you go to college and make it, and they want you to get bigger, they will have stuff to make that happen. A guy I played high school ball with went to Wisconsin to play ball. He came back 4 months later and had 40 lbs of muscle he didn't have when he left. So if your skills are up to par, they will take you.

Honestly, defensive backs aren't very strong in terms of what people on a weightlifting board would consider strong. At the combine they rep 185, not 225 on the bench press. Aside from the odd freak here and there, I'd probably guess that most couldn't bench 225 for more than 5, maybe a single at 275, some would be much weaker. Squats are hard because you have the depth issue, but trust me, you wouldn't be impressed. Like I said, aside from the odd freak, most DBs wouldn't be able to squat a legit 315 on a good day. Most scouts would rather a kid who could dunk a basketball than one with a big bench because the big bench can be developed, if you've got lead in your ass there isn't much that can be done about that.

It's always fun to compare, I know. Football is thought of as a "strength sport" and a lot of attributes that make one a good athlete also contribute to weightroom strength, but at the D1 level, it's a lot more than being strong. But, you obviously know this. Honestly, if D1 didn't work out, you'd make a hell of a D 3 linebacker . . . D 3 is a place where strength can make a HUGE difference because the skill level is a bit lower, the speed is a bit slower, and being stronger than the next guy can get you further.

For purposes of your question, your strength and speed right now are probably more comparable with a college linebacker if your squats are a ull range of motion. Problem is you're undersized for linebacker at D1 . . . like I said, you'd have a good chance at being a monster linebacker at D 3. You could walk int any D 1 weightroom right now and bench, squat, and deadlift with any safety and likely blow all of them away, save for the rare freak here and there.

I understand its not just about strength, but im just talking about those. Like what are some numbers they look for that either tells them hes strong or theres no way?

For a D1 safety. I will be walking on to UNR (Nevada Wolfpack) in a year and half.

5'9", 195lbs, 10%BF
Bench - 330
Squat - 340
Deadlift - 375
Hang Cleans - 225 couple times
40yd dash - 4.74 :(

5'9" and a 4.74 40 does not equal D1 football. I don't care how strong you are. That is reality - sorry.

Herschel Walker has been quoted as saying he never lifted a weight in his football career. He only did pushups and situps everyday.

Honestly the only thing for lifting I'd improve is the squat. Although many football players don't do legit squats, I believe their legit squats would be a little higher. Start running though!

4.6 is slow for D1. By the time I was exiting HS, I was in the 4.4 range, and I was running against Dominique Foxworth at a combine at UM. Dominique was in the high 4.3's, and they were telling him that he needed to drop down to low 4.3's or 4.2's. DB's have to be the fastest people on the field. Work on your wind sprints and bringing that 40 time down bro. I still have two years remaining of NCAA eligibility. I started with a D3 school, who went up to I-AA the following year. I am going back to law school and I am going to try and walkon to FIU's football team, which is D1!

Thanks tblock!

needmass, gl with walking on. Ill def be lowering my 40 time then. Just sucks to focus on speed when i really want to get stronger, and it seems like its hard to do both at the same time. Like cutting/bulking
