there's this dude at my gym he's pretty nice except he always asks me to spot him every time he sees me. it's always the same thing every time: he loads 225 on bench and asks me to make sure i "stay with him and keep it moving." I always end up curling the weight for him for about 4 reps, and i usually go through 3 sets of this! Sometimes he even has the nerve to ask me how much i helped him. At first i used to say he was doing most of it but i dont wanna keep this charade up. I don't see him ever changing his ways cause he;'s already probly like 50. Should i tell him he can't even come close to putting up the weight, or should i just refuse to spot him anymore but let him keep up his overestimation of himself.

dont take any weight off when you spot him at all. even on the last rep make him hang it up himself.
The more you help them the more they want to put on or try extra reps. I'm tired of breaking my back for people in the gym too.

When I get one of these, I watch him struggle for about 20 seconds, then take it off his chest and rack it. Walk away without saying a word.

I would wait till he drops the weight down. (not crushing him but when he is at total failure) and rack it. Be like this is obviously to much for you.

In the morons thread I mentioned someone like this that used to always ask me to spot him with incline dumbells. he was good for about 3 on his own and wanted to spot him for 5 more reps. Each time asking for a "big spot".

The first time I let it slide but the second time he asked me to spot him I hardly helped him as I was sick of curling the weight for him.

After he was finished I said you should lower the weight and get more reps on your own. He stated some bull shit about getting a pump and making the muscles get used to more reps. He stopped asking me for a spot soon that.

I'll help someone through a sticking point provided they've told me beforehand that they're going to need help on some of the reps. If they need more than that then I rack it.

Doesnt really bother me, Im always happy to help a bro out. Course I dont have a guys asking me to spot him all the time and they dont put on too much weight to where they only get 3 reps. If that happened then id probably be in the same boat with everyone else :P

I'm the manager at my college's weight room and so I am constantly up there and constantly being asked for spots. With so many "hard-ass" guys trying to show off how much weight they can curl, bench, squat or whatever, I am constantly being asked for a spot.

In situations like the above, I'll just let them get pinned and then act surprised and row it off of them and onto the rack. Being pinned almost always crushes that fucking hard-ass ego. I can't remember anyone ever trying the same weight again after being pinned.

If they go for the same weight again, tell them that you don't wanna be seen spotting someone so fucking weak. (lol)

If its a spot for more than 2 reps MAYBE, then just tell them they should lower the weight & work up to it again.
