Ulter is right here but unless you are some major criminal they are not goingto spend thousands of dollars to find info if you have erased and overwritten it 12 times or more, they can do it bvut for alot of cases they wont do it for instance time and money!

Just use a program they dont guarantee anything butthey dont hurt! Chances are if you are a big crimninal they can watch your screen anyways and have everything digitally recorded so erasing or encryption is a waste!!

reformatting once twice three times will not to shit to keep files from being recovered on your hard drive (by the way I’m a computer consultant and own my own business) you must use some soft of software to clean your hard drive the preferred software package for cleaning your hard drive and encrypting files is PGP (PGP-Wipe to clean up) But if you are very paroinoid you should keep your cookies cleared and your temp Internet files then Run the wipe program after all these things are deleted. To clean up your internet files try something like cyberscrub.com but for doing the actually hard drive wipe use PGP.

Personally, if you are SUPER paranoid, I would use FreeBSD or Linux, get some good encryption software that you CAN REVIEW THE SOURCE on (check for the back door crap) and get a good wipe program to use in conjunction with the encryption program. Also, get a good lenth of iron, wrap some cooper coils around it as many times as you can and keep 2 car batteries in parallel next to the end of the wires. Put this electro-magnet near your drive. After doing the above, if the feds come, attach the wires to the car batteries - USE THICK RUBBER GLOVES AND BE cAREFUL you'll prolkly end up killing yourself by electrocuting yourself - so you may noit want to bother

OH, in case you guys didn't pick up on the sarcasm here - there is very little you can do to fully protect yourself. In the event that you are "busted", the cops will probably grab your computer/hard drive before you can "melt" it or drop it in acid or generate a high enough electro-magnetic charge to move all of the magnetic layers to a different (and nonsensical) state.

DESTROY IT

The only TRUE way to keep the info from them is to DESTROY the hardrive. They can also retrieve bits of info from yuor RAM, believe it or not. Go to TechTV/ screensavers/archives and look it up they did a whole segment on it with a former FBI Investigator. Also remember, for them to lie to you in order to extract info from you is a recommended technique. As long as you are not coerced or promised anything. moral of the story. deny,. deny, deny. The burden of proof is ALWAYS on Law Enforcement.

They did a study where they took numerous HDD used, recycled, refurbished, and adddes some that used everyknown scrubbing technique. They mixed em all up and then ran tests.they were able to retrieve significant amounts of data off of everyone. Anything can be significant. The smallest piece of data can be used to corraborate other evidence. You never know. Best advice is to not break the law.
