Hign Blood Pressure but still need to lose weight

I've been reading this board for about a month now and getting ideas on what to eat and how to excercise but I'm limited to these things because I have a high blood pressure. My physician told me not to lift weights because the blood pressure will rise even more in danger levels. How do I go about eating and working out without putting myself at health risk? I've bought glutamine, fat burners without caffiene, protein, and vitamins. Am I only limited to cardio/running excercises? Currently I'm 6'2" 250 and would like to be 200 by this time next year.

high blood pressure

Try low-carbing to get your weight down first. My SO (who hates exercise) dropped about 35 pounds on low-carb and was able to throw his BP meds away. He started out at 235/'6-3" and dropped to 196.

Try Atkins or Protein Power or one of the other keto type diets. On them your blood pressure will drop FAST - so fast you may have to cut back on your meds or get off them because you will become dizzy. After about a month of low-carbing, my SO started having dizzy spells - then realized his BP was TOO low - and stopped the meds.

After your BP and weight are down - you can start lifting. Until then, aerobics won't hurt.

I was told this year that I had high bp, never had it before and after a few months was put on bp meds too. I still do cardio and weight training though. Was not told to stop, in fact told to continue, that it would help. Is my doc nuts? I haven't retested my bp, but am doing Atkins now.

Am just beginning to research more about diet and high bp. I'll keep you posted.

Well, I'm not on any BP meds and do not plan on taking them. I here about this Atkins diet and did a search but didn't come up with any instructions or guidelines? What is the Atkins Diet and where can I find out more about it? Does anyone have a link?

Your best bet is to get the book - Diet Revolution by R Atkins or even Protein Power by Eades - both diets will lower your blood pressure and the Protein Power book will tell you why and how. They're both available in paperback for about $8.

BP meds SUCK! (for guys, anyway)

I've been on Zestoretic and its generic equivalent for about 8 months, and started working out about 6 months ago. I changed my diet for the better, although I didn't do a specific plan. I track my protein, carbs, cals, and fat.

Salt is very key for lowering bp, by the way. You may already know that, but it's not mentioned in any of the posts.

I should also state that I was not overweight when I started, but rather I was "skinny fat". 176 @ 19.5% fat.

I have had no sides whatsoever from the bp meds. Mine was around 150 over 87, I think, when I first went on the meds.

Salt is important, but more importantly a correct ratio of potassium to sodium (4:1 some say - but from food rather than supplements).

People who ARE overweight often find that losing weight will drop their blood pressure by itself. Insulin itself causes an increase in blood pressure, so reducing the frequency of when high GI carbs are eaten might be a good idea, if fat is not an issue.

You are lucky you had no side effects from the meds - most guys find their dicks no longer work as long as they are on the meds. Common side effect listed in the PDR for most types of high blood pressure medications.

Viagra is compatible with BP meds (if not nitroglycerine) - but expensive. And, yes, it's worth every dime, but standardly about $10 a dose.

I think this is largely because I'm on a fairly mild bp med. It's listed as a side, but I've not experienced that to this point.

My eventual goal is to get off of them altogether.

Good for you! :)

Since your BP isn't really that high and you are not overfat, you may want to work on balancing your "hydraulic minerals": potassium, calcium, magnesium and sodium. Cut down on sodium and up the potassium (Morton Lite salt is a cheap way to supplement potassium) and make sure you're getting enough calcium and magnesium.
