Hey EF women...need serious advice

Certain ultrasound proceedures require internal penetration...it's TERRIBLE and I went through it last year when they thought I might have ovarian cancer, but it is what it is. it sounds like your girlfriend was having more problems because of her own past and not because of inappropriateness on the part of the doctor - what exactly where the comments allegedly made?

I empathize with her as I know what that is like as well, but be careful and get all the facts before you start ruining careers.

This is pretty much what the procedure was, but they were looking for ovarian cysts that had grown. It required that they find her ovary which the technician had trouble with but the doctor came in and started forcing the probe in much farther and very roughly because the technician couldn't. They had to move her bowel out of the way to find her ovary. At one point she ordered my girlfriend to "get your leg up higher" in a loud voice while having her pinned down and being on top of her which of course triggered a flashback to her previous trauma. Then when she was done and my girlfriend was crying (even the technician was apologizing the whole time) she said my girlfriend had some obvious problems and needed to make sure she was prepared for what had to be done next time. And this is after my girlfriend made it very clear about her past to both of them.

It also took 90 minutes to get everything done. I have no idea whether or not that is excessive, but if you're strapped into a table with instruments inside you for that long, it's going to start hurting - and she is still in pain today over 24 hours later.

I'm not trying to ruin anyone's career, but a female doctor treating a patient with a callous manner and no empathy in a senstitive area like that, especially a woman who has been through past trauma needs to be told that it's not acceptable. And what if all that moving stuff around caused some kind of damage or made things worse?

Some women GYN/OB can be surprisingly rough I had routine check ups where I want to smack the doc and once a PA square in the head with my foot for their rough handling.

If by strapped you me her feet were in stirups yes but you are not strapped down and there's usually a blanket covering your hips and thighs - you're not spread eagled and completely exposed.

90 minutes - was it only and internal ultrasound or both a yearly full check up AND the ultrasound?

There's no doubt it could be traumatic (add to that her past), have you seen the stick that you're probbed with - it's long and when they can't get a good view over your ovaries they're pushing all around and it is extremely uncomfortable on top of the wretched pain of having big cysts.

The easiest solution is to get a copy of your records and the results of this exam and change doctors. Ask around who other people use and like - even then it's still a hard match.

Okay, I'm going to pick this apart, not b/c I have anything against you, or that I think you are sue happy, but because I don't want you to waste your time and money persuing something that will go no where.

1) I am sorry this happened. But sometimes medicine hurts.

2) Here's the docs point of view -- I dont get the image, she ends up having a mass, and I get sued for not finding it before the girl loses her ability to bear children OR I do what it takes to get the image, the girl has issues and some discomfort, but she gets over it

3) If the tech had trouble, it obviously was a complicated case. It's not like the doc was in there going crazy for no reason.

4) So they had to rearrange her insides to get a view.......guess what......it happens. Nobody's insides are the same, they're all a little bit different, and things get in the way.

5) I dont see anything wrong with saying "Get your leg up higher" Maybe the doc could have said it a little nicer. But still, rudeness is nto a matter of malpractice.

6) Your gf DOES have issues that she needs to work out. Maybe she should see a therapist about it. And I think you said in an earlier post that she never told anyone about the previous abuse ---- perhaps the doc would have acted differently had she known this. Bad beside manner? Absolutely, but its still not malpractice.

7) 90 minutes??? Seriously? Isnt 90 minutes of discomfort worth making sure you dont have cysts all over the organs that make it possible for you to have children???

8) Also, the doc is female, and it sounds like the tech was in there the whole time to. So, that's not good for you. Not that you'd have a case anyways.

Again, I'm not trying to be an asshole.........well........I take that back, yes I am. But really.....your doctor was not negligent. Rude, yes. Dont like it? Find someone else. Take your money elsewhere. You wanna hit her in the pocketbook? That;s your best bet.

As side note; did they tell you what kind of cysts she has?
And that they have grown larger? - did she have another ultrasound previously or do you mean that they have just grown?

I think what Chris means *poke* is that it is the docs job is find out what is the health problem and what can be done to fix it and it's not always a particularly pleasant process. The doctor has a responsibility to keep your body healthy and not to miss anything - the lessor responsibility (unfortunately) is to have an impeccable bedside manner. And perhaps not focusing too much on this event to keep reminding her of it and maybe you can find help for your girl to get closure on what happened to her while trying to deal with health problems and finding a doctor that can do what is expected of them and still be a good fit for your girl.

LOL Vel's right....I am sorry for what your girl had to go through. I absolutely NEVER wish for a patient to be in discomfort or distress (that's why I chose a specialty that constantly pushes narcotics! :) ) But it's one thing to be violated, and it's another to experience some discomfort in an exam. Think about things before you decide you wanna sue someone.

And sorry for being such a dick. I'm normally pretty nice.

frivilous malpractice is a touchy subject......

Some docs deserve to be sued and prevented from practicing ever again. But many people see commercials on tv, dont mind trying to make a quick buck, and think the doc can afford it anyways when something like this happens.

Doctors are human. We make mistakes. Sometimes shit happens that is out of our control.

And we never want to see our patients in discomfort or distress. It truely breaks my heart to see a person cry. Sometimes its just part of the ordeal however.
