Help me, my desk chair sucks

I've always wondered, what is that little knob under the actual seat for? I turn and turn it and it does nothing. My main goal is i'd like to lean back a bit in my chair, but it doesn't seem to allow it, but maybe that strange knob has something to do with it.....it has a spring if that helps. Anyone know a lot about chairs?

I'm no chair expertise, sorry. But i would also like to know what the hell it does, my chair does swing back and i can hold it back in that position, but there's a lever for that, now what the knob does i have NO idea.

Does it look like a drafting chair or a task chair??

A rectangular back with a slight curved arm attaching it to the seat?

If so the the knob lossened will let you push the arm to and from the seat base. Pull it father away and you will have more give to lean back.

So loosen knob, pull arm out, tighten knob...

good luck.

the back and the seat are attached by the standard solid l shaped piece of metal. That stuff is not moving. I just want the actual seat to lean back, not the back of the chair. The knob though, can it help me........
