I think 95% of supplements are blown out of proportion and thats being conservative.
Your body is going to do the same thing with protein as long as its from a bioavailable source. The highest being the egg. Do to high temperature of cooking some of this protein downgrades along with vitamins and minerals unless you down your eggs Rocky style.
I use protein powder and MRP's the same way, as part of a meal. This involves mixture of flax seed oil and addition of some carb source.
I don't know what your protein powder choice was in the past, but I would suspect you are getting better gains off whole food due to more calories.
