hiya, im going to pull my "im a pharmacist" line just about now, and say that i did learn about saw palmetto, liver thistle, and reams of other alternative therapies.

i have said over and over that imo the way to protect your liver is to remove whatever is insulting your liver (the drug) and to keep it well hydrated, and supplied with appropriate substrates (good clean diet, vitamins etc...the usual)

there are many people out there who think that milk thistle and the like are a mithril vest against liver damage. they arent. im not saying that they are useless, but the studies i have seen are not convincing, imo. many are paid for by the sellers of the herbs, on limited population groups, with some shoddy study protocols.

anyway

I don't really wanna get into a pissing constest with anyone but..... Herbs have not been as keenly researched as their drugs counter parts because, well, who wants to spend a 100 mil on something that cannot be patented for at least a billion? It would take some rich ass bastard to invest that kind of cash on a seroius scientific study and not be able to sell it. Sal palmettoe has been used for 100's of years in europe with great resaults. It kinda of pisses me off that people think just because its a plant its bullshit yet alot of drugs in the market today are from plants chemicals that have been synthisized, such as ephedra for colds, Opium for pain, etc. Do you really think that there would be as many opiod based pain killers that there are today if opium was legal? I think not.

you have a point, to a degree. however, drug companies keenly look for new drugs, and let me assure you the first place they look is amongst traditional remedies/herbs. pretty much all the herbs ahve been well investigated to some degree (dont want to spend 20 mintues talking about drug development)

and as for your opium statement, well, yes there would still be lots and lots of opiate pain killers out there. that and a lot more addicts, too
