I am going to be in my first bjj tournament this weekend. I have been training for about 3 months. I will be in the masters division (over 30).

Any tips on what I should look for / expect?

I have recently changed my "style" from fighting not to lose, but fighting to win. I found I was always on the defense and never really going for a win. I have since changed that to get a bit more aggressive and it has helped.

try not to get nervous and psyche yourself out.
conserve energy when possible.
get a good nights rest before hand.

I let the nerves get to me. Lost on points from a guard pass to side control with 20 seconds or so left in the match.

Neither of us could take the other down. I was able to pull guard, but unable to submit or sweep. With time running out, I opened my guard to much to try to get the sweep and he passed..then got a quick side control....got me on points.

as long as you learn from your mistakes you can come back better than before. The important thing is that you went out there and you did it instead of always wondering "What if?"

definitely. It also fuels the desire to train even harder for the next time.

I am looking forward to doing better in the next competition..whenever it is!!

is this gi or no gi?
ive been training mma and grappling for 2.5 years and been in a few tourneys. My best advice is unless you have a great shot let the other guy come at you. When he goes for his shot sprawl and take position on his back. This will frustrate and tire him right off the bet, mostly likely you will have more than one fight so its very important to save your energy, dont be afraid to take your time, out on the mat time semms to go real fast but in reality only seconds have gone by. Good luck , win or lose make sure you learn something.
