first comp in 2 months

nivek

New member
I'm 18 yrs old and currently 205, trying to drop to 190ish. I plan on competing in my first powerlifting meet in mid June. I'm either going to do the deadlift or the deadlift and bench press. Any words of advice would greatly be appreciated, thank you.

Yes....stay at 205 and compete in the 198's. The next class under that is 181.

How tall are you?

I made a mistake, the comp includes squat along with dl and bp, sorry I was looking at the wrong date.

Hannibal: I'm 5'8" so i can stop dieting now(as of this morning i'm 202lbs) and compete in the 198's, thats great. I'm hungry time for food.

Nivek,

Good luck buddy. What kind of weights are you going for?

The comp is june 22 and the deadline to resister is june 7 i think. So by the begining of june I want to be able to pull a 400# dl and a 300# bp. Currently I have a 340# dl and a 250# bp, I know those predictions are pretty high but I think i can get it.

Thanks for the support.

here are my thoughts,

gain some weight,do this meet in the 220 class, that way you can eat whatever and not have to worry about weighing in that much. if you look at some of the top lifters that are lighter weights youll notice they started at heavier classes, got real strong then dropped to lower classes, one person who comes to mind is George Halbert, i believe George used to be in the 275s(he also totaled elite at 275 before he focused on bench)
like JM blakely told me one time "you have to build the house before your paint it" so gain some weight.

I agree with you. The whole dieting idea stopped once I decided to switch my training and put 100% into this meet. I gained all the weight back and am back to 205lbs. I also believe that it was JM Blakely that said" Remember- If you want to beat the man, you've gotta out-eat the man!"

good. now are you going to wear any gear for the meet?

I don't have any experience with a shirt or anything else so i plan to do this meet raw. Unfortunately I workout at a commercial gym(I work there so I get a free membership; not a trainer) and I haven't met anybody else interested in powerlifting. My only source right now is this website and a few others.

To bad you don't live near mobile, alabama...i have 3 shirts that I never use. I'm 18 also, and close to your weight...Even have a double denim radicial velcro back shirt that i would let u use :-/ ...You would fall in love with it but good luck bro!

I live right near Boston but I appreciate your generosity. Once I become more involved in the sport i hope to meet more people and hopefully they will show me the ropes. Honestly when you described your shirt I had no idea what you meant

What are your comp numbers? If you don't mind me asking since you're right around my weight.

I was fortunate enough to start lifting with a power-lifter a year ago. He's 41, weights 245, and can bench 500 pretty solid.....He's not juicing nor does he power lift anymore..Just a strong man and he knows his stuff...

I'm only weighing 180 right now, but for my competition in two months, I will get up to almost 200lbs..if not 200lbs. My goal is 415 with a shirt. For me to get that goal, I will need to bench about 350 without the shirt. I know I can get 300 right now( weighing only 180 ) and that's only 50lbs more in two months...not to bad...I should get it. Squats and deadlifts I dont lift to heavy because I already have a bad knee and I need to take care of it due to my occupation/hobby.

Good luck to you and just be determind to kick some ass!!

Best of luck to you too, and I expect to hear about that 415.

liftbig,

I get about the same out of my fury and double denim radicial cut velcro back shirt... The fury is tight as shit, but the double denim is pretty loose on me. Thats why I'm trying to put on more weight where I can get more out of my double denim. I got a good deal on it ( bought it used ). I still get about 60lbs out of it, with it being loose so I can't wait to see what I get out of it when it finally fits!

lift,

I think somewhere around 205 would be pretty solid in the shirt. I weight 180 right now and its pretty damn loose... sucks..I got up to 195 for my last meet and still had just a bit of room...So if I get up to about 205 for the meet, I shouldn't have no problem at ALL to get 415 or more...
