My dumbest friend in high school will retire from the post office on down the road. He has no skills....drives a cart. Makes 55,000 with overtime.
Thing is, the post office has not raised pay since '92 according to him. So he has made this much since then. He spent nothing on college and started making money fresh out of high school.
He now drives a mercedes, porsche, truck, motorcycle, boat, ATV, and jet ski. Home will be paid for in a few more years.
Me? I have about 165 credit hours. Every recession has just about killed me and I've logged more time in recessions than out of them due to location etc. I've tried several potentially high paying careers but, for various reasons, none of them worked out.
Almost every company I joined started cutting back immediately...they always have a cash crisis. I started my own business and within 1 1/2 years was doing 12,000 month in sales and service of reef aquariums. I may have been the best in the business at the time....I though so. People thought I had magic with the worlds most delicate ecosystems.
Got hit by 18 wheeler on I-70 and tried to make it in photography while keeping the best old accounts. Was doing good before the latest recession. Photography gets killed by recessions. Nobodys phone is ringing. Recessions rip years out of the productivity of many people in business unless it is a product that is not sensitive to the economy.....seems that most are.
His net worth is considerably greater than mine. There is a lot to be said for an early start and no bad years.
Education is an investment...some pay and others don't. We have grown fond of exporting jobs to Asia so be sure your potential profession doesn't get flushed down the toilet.
Lots of college grads hit it fairly big but there is college debt, lost years of income, sensitivity to recessions, risk of getting skill exported to Habib.
I would not recommend college unless someone wants to do it. Almost all of the milliionaires that I work for have minimal college education. You do not need it to succeed.
My sisters degree paid off splendidly for her, my brothers degrees proved to be the worst disaster possible and he was the hardest working guy you would ever meet. Everybody was in awe of his abilities it seemed. Me? Could still go either way. My dumb friend? He is set up. Government retirement and steady income in a job that is almost impossible to lose.
