I disagree. The type of technology it'd take to make space travel feasible is far beyond anythihg we currently have now, so any race/species who had mastered such technology would have to be generally smarter than us.

I'd say 50-75% chance they'd be hostile, but I wouldnt throw the "friendly explorers" theory out the window right away.

I was watching the movie "Signs" on video the other night. I find it interesting the way that the film industry usually portrays extraterrestrials as hostile creatures out to "get" us.

I find this highly unlikely. I believe any species that has become an advanced space faring organism would have gone through the social change necessary to purge itself of militaristic and aggressive impulses.

In my mind this is only common sense because any species which had not done this would have wiped itself out before it got to such an advanced level. Even at our relatively primitive stage of development it is only a miracle that we didn't exterminate ourselves during the Cold War.

Even if we don't kill ourselves off violently, we seem likely to do it incrementally through the destruction of our environment.

Remember Sci-fi is just that - sci-fi.

i.e. an illustration of a possible outcome of events based on insufficient data to make such a hypothesis, i.e. the same thing as your belief that they won't be hostile.

Because we face this challenge it is stimulating social change.

The only thing it has stimulated in recent history is conflict. We want Iraq dead because they want Israel dead who wants Palestine dead who wants Israel dead, and North Korea decides to raise its hand and say "hey we want you dead too." Humanity on a global scale is nothing more than a gathering of savages. It's only because of the elite few (maybe 1-2% of the population) that are born each generation that keep the planet going.

Yikes! I'd have to disagree that the relationship between the third world and the USA is one of benefits flowing in the direction you mentioned. But that is a topic for another thread.

Feel free to disagree, but what have Israel and Africa given us in return for our generousity besides ingratitude and assholicism, respectively.

An extraterrestrial species is to humanity as the USA is to a Africa. Earth would get clean, efficient energy technology just as Africa got $40B to fight AIDS. The extraterrestrial species would get a new threat attempting to exploit their new technology for aggressive behavior just like the USA got "fuck you george bush... america doesn't care about human beings!" speech.

I disagree, the premise is based on these aliens having the same internal makeup as humans. Man is what he is due to evolution. Maybe these creatures don't have emotions, which would make it so they wouldn't understand our emotions, or empathy. Maybe they would be hard wired to be violent and view it as a necessity. Who knows what their evolutionary history or sociology would be like. It could seem totally rediculous to us, but normal to them.

Are you attracted to monkeys with red butts? They have 99% the same type of DNA we do but their mentality is totally different on what is attractive. A Nazi concentration camp worker, Ghandi, Al Capone & mother Teresa all shared 99.9% the same DNA. this would be a totally foreign species, they probably would have 0% in common with our DNA, they wouldn't even have DNA most likely.
