Extraterrestrials wouldn't be hostile

HansNZ said:
I was watching the movie "Signs" on video the other night. I find it interesting the way that the film industry usually portrays extraterrestrials as hostile creatures out to "get" us.

I find this highly unlikely. I believe any species that has become an advanced space faring organism would have gone through the social change necessary to purge itself of militaristic and aggressive impulses.

In my mind this is only common sense because any species which had not done this would have wiped itself out before it got to such an advanced level. Even at our relatively primitive stage of development it is only a miracle that we didn't exterminate ourselves during the Cold War.

Even if we don't kill ourselves off violently, we seem likely to do it incrementally through the destruction of our environment.

Just my 2c :)

I would have to disagree slightly. You do make a good point, but you forgot about the nature of the beast. "Survival of the fitest."

You made a comment along the lines of, this is only common sense because any species which had not done this would have wiped itself out before it got to such an advanced level. Do you realize how many countless civilizatons wiped each other out just to have the next one advance to where we are today.

Intelligence can be questioned. Questions lead to disagreements, disagreements lead to war. We are a very advanced civilization now, and look at us.

Yes, we are still existing today. But look at what the genius man has created to destroy the world. The Point is, don't fool yourself.

I do not in anyway acknowledge the existance of alien life forms, nor do I discredit it.

I agree, but not to the point of absolute certainty.

Referring to a little bit of Star Trek sci-fi (or even world history), you can find numerous species that are hostile despite their technological superiority.

The Borg for instance.

Or, more realistically speaking, those nice gentlemen who discovered America and slaughtered the Indians. Advanced sea-faring organisms were probably yesterday's equivalent of today's space-faring organisms, yet the purging of aggressive impulses was certainly not the case.

But I do believe strongly that the intentions of an extraterrestrial visitor will not be to rape and pillage... though I don't see any other point of visiting such a primative society. Surely they'd know that the first thing we'd ask for is their technology and medicine with nothing in exchange. That's certainly been the case on an Earth-level when it comes to a relationship between the U.S. and third world countries.

Let's just hope that the first extraterrestrial greeting is "Live long and prosper" and not "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile!"

Nerd.

Remember Sci-fi is just that - sci-fi.
HansNZ, that's a rather foolish thing to say.

Do you realize how much modern-day tech was envisioned in Star Trek back in the early-'70s?

In ST: DS9, the very counterpoint was made by a Ferrengi character to a Human. He commented how humans thought Ferrengi were so backwards yet their planet's history had no wars among themselves or salvery. Humans, however, killed each other and enslaved each other before going out into space.

The simple fact is, if an alien race comes to Earth, it will have one of two possible views of us. We are equal lifeforms to be treated with respect and dignity, or we are inferior lifeforms to be enslaved and exploited or erradicated.

The fact that they didn't kill themselves off doesn't mean they can't kill off those who are different from them.

The fact that they can cross thousands of light years doesn't mean they have wisdom or kindness.

I think they'd be all high and mighty. You know. "Well on Zardon we have...", "On Zardon our ____ is sooooooo much better than your ____" or "you think that's a bicep peak... no *Zardonite hits a double bicep pose*... that's a bicep peak."

And then I'd have to hit him back with "Oh yeah? Well if things were so great on Zardon, why didn't you keep your freaky bicep ass there?" :D

i read something about a project in new mexico or arizona, where they are trying to store ozone gases in empty oil reserves. it was something i just skimmed over looking for something else so it may be other pollutents. anyways, i think we will meet all challenges ahead of us in the future including environmental problems.

LOL, BTW, i love your signature. im gonna find one of yours and use it.

p.s. are you ryanh?

I would venture to think that they have been watching us from a far and are disgusted at the way we treat each other.

I had one in my bedroom last night. He just wanted to watch me jack off and that was it. Hard getting it up though with those beady eyes staring at me.
